The Supreme Court sat on the Sabarimala review petitions for nine months only to refer them to a larger bench on the penultimate working day of CJI Gogoi. It’s a waste of precious time. CJIs should end this self-indulgence of giving big judgments in the last days of their tenure.

  1. It is possible to discern shades of Ayodhya in this judgment. Both privilege matters of faith in issues that should be seen in temporal terms. In a country where religion plays an outsized role in national – now also in public – life, the Sabarimala verdict, as also Triple Talaaq, were bold, reformist moves. 2. For me, it will be a sad day if a majority of judges on a seven member a Bench rule against the admission of women to the shrine, ruling in favour of long established religion.
