Not enamored of the “foreign media”. But this is a factual report and a perspective. Both important.
We can keep fighting regional and religious battles. Our political system can’t get basic economic reforms going. Unless we act with intention of building a Nation, we will stagnate. I wish the media conveys this message to the people, who are the most affected stake holders in the game. We are in an age of democracy where riots, hartals and and blockades are retrograde actions.
Strategy:
There is a larger picture within which we have to strategise. We can’t here chose our neighbours who are unreliable across contentious and treacherous borders (in as much as, when both sides claim the same piece of land, it becomes contentious). We have seen that diplomacy can take us only so far.The ultimate intention of our hostile neighbours is to keep India under wraps and not allow it to grow into any sort of regional / world power.The only strategy with India, in the circumstance, is a two pronged approach.
1. Develop and maintain a well equipped and highly motivated Defence force as all major powers are doing.
2. Develop the Nation as a self sustaining (not a closed door policy) economy – a robust domestic defence industry is paramount to sustain the economy in which high Defence spending is imperative.
In regard to the minor (but important) neighbours, we need to realize that no country can live on love and free air. We have to be in a position that being a friend of India becomes highly beneficial. Period.
We have to map our actions against this larger picture.
