If the joke wasn’t on us, a democracy, we’d call the denial of bail to comedian Munawar Faruqui, charged with what he didn’t do, Orwellian, laugh, and move on. Primary function of the courts is to preserve our lawful rights and liberty. Their increasing failure to do so is alarming.

Pakistan holding terrorists like Omar Sheikh as valued asset is a display of shamelessness

Omar Sheikh’s acquittal by Pakistani Supreme Court on charge of killing reporter Daniel Pearl vindicates nobody. Holding global terrorists like Sheikh and Masood Azhar, who the world saw being released in exchange for a hijacked airliner with passengers, as valued assets is a display of extraordinary shamelessness by Pakistani establishment.

Delhi Police claim that it allowed tractor rally in good faith another blot on its recent record

Delhi Police claim that it suspected the intentions of farmers but allowed tractor rally in good faith smacks of sloppiness. Law enforcement, especially in the national capital on Republic Day, cannot be based on trust when intelligence hints at danger. This is one more blot on the force’s recent record.

  1. Have to disagree. Why dont you ask the MPs to amend IPC and remove the sections that deal with “hurting religious sentiments”? The ban on books because islamist mobs will burn stuff or arresting comedians all that come from those provisions. Instead of changing the law, you seem to be asking for the courts to ignore the law of the land. Wrong. Coming to your take on delhi police is also wrong. A political call at the political level was taken to allow the rally despite inputs from the police. It’s a case of damned if you do damned if you don’t. If the rally wasn’t allowed, many would cry hoarse saying democracy and right to protest are being stifled. The union leaders took responsibility for maintaining peace. Book them. The police showed remarkable restraint. All this while, the bjp was alleging that anti social elements have infiltrated into the protest. None listened. Abh bhuktenge hum sab. Ask for stringent punishment for those who were violent and also a wider discussion on ways to protest, availability of public spaces is needed. Pointing fingers at delhi police in this case is just lousy.

  2. you are absolutely right on denial of bail to munawar faruqui.
but you cannot blame delhi police for what was essentially a hooliganism by so called farmers.

  3. Not all Indians are receiving the same justice from the Courts. Whether it is in terms of the time taken to hear and dispose of their cases, or the final outcome, on broadly similar grounds. This is accentuating the basic inequality of lacking the financial means to engage good lawyers. One hopes the honourable apex court will undo the injustice being visited upon Shri Munawar Faruqui.
