New Delhi: A Japan Airlines plane caught fire after landing at Tokyo’s Haneda airport Tuesday, national broadcaster NHK said, adding that all 379 passengers and the crew members were safely evacuated.
The plane was still burning, according to NHK.
A spokesperson at Japan Airlines said the aircraft had come from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido.
As firefighters battled the blaze, footage showed passengers and crew gliding down emergency slides to escape the burning aircraft.
Reports have also emerged that five of the six crew members of the Coast Guard aircraft were unaccounted for while one escaped.
The reason behind the inferno could be a possible collision with a Coast Guard aircraft, Reuters reported, forcing the plane to skid off the tarmac and burst into flames.
Five of the six crew of the coast guard aircraft have died, the country’s public broadcaster NHK reported. A coast guard spokesperson earlier said five of the crew were unaccounted for but that the captain had escaped.
