Musk gave order to slow down Ukraine’s Starlink, WSJ reports

A recent slowdown of the SpaceX’s Starlink satellite system that enables Ukraine to fend off deadly Russian aerial assaults came from an order by Elon Musk, the company’s chief executive officer, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Musk restricted the speed of Ukraine’s access to the satellite system, which hampered the ability of the country’s drones to carry out defensive and offensive missions, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed American officials and others. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces have been carrying out relentless attacks on Ukraine, including striking civilian targets.

Musk discussed the Starlink decision with President Donald Trump after the shortfall became publicly known, according to the Journal. The Journal also reported that a person familiar with the matter said Musk, a Trump ally, had talked about the Starlink slowdown with administration officials before it went into effect.

Trump has faulted Ukraine for a rise in diesel fuel costs, and demanded the country end its strikes on Russian refineries. The bulk of the rise this year in diesel and retail gasoline costs came after the president’s decision to launch strikes in concert with Israel against Iran.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the WSJ report. A Defense Department official previously said that nothing had changed with respect to US policy toward Ukraine.

Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, faulted Musk and Trump in a CNN interview for what he said was a pattern of behavior repeatedly siding with Russia over Ukraine. Meanwhile, California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff called for Congress to investigate the incident.

“Either the President was lying or Musk was lying, but the decision to slow down satellite speed and access has life or death consequences for Ukraine,” said Schiff. “This deserves a full investigation by the Senate. Elon Musk should be compelled to testify before Congress and under oath.”

Earlier this month, Trump announced that he had reached an agreement with Putin to supply the US and global market with diesel. That alarmed Ukraine’s supporters, including some Republican lawmakers, who pointed out that revenue from energy exports helps finance Russia’s war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an interview with Bloomberg on Sunday, accused Trump of trying to coerce his country into capitulating to Russia.

But at a press conference in Oslo earlier Tuesday, Zelenskyy sounded more upbeat on relations with the US, saying he discussed intelligence sharing and access to Starlink with special envoy Steve Witkoff.

“We’ve been very concrete, and the organization was very positive,” Zelenskyy said alongside leaders from Norway and Finland, who also attended the talks.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
