New Delhi: Japan has announced a significant aid package of $105 million to Ukraine, aimed at helping the country’s war-torn territory recover from landmine and unexploded ordnance threats.

The aid was announced as part of a broader commitment from the two countries to provide financial and business support to Ukraine as it seeks to rebuild its economy and infrastructure, which has been devastated by the conflict.

The funds will be used to address a range of reconstruction needs, including landmine and unexploded ordnance decontamination, as well as restoring electricity and energy infrastructure. The allocation was made during the Japan-Ukraine Conference in Tokyo, which was held ahead of the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The conference saw the signing of over 50 memorandums of cooperation between the public and private sectors of both countries, with a focus on areas such as infrastructure rebuilding, demining, agricultural expansion, and governance enhancement.

In his keynote speech, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida emphasized the importance of the ongoing cooperation between Ukraine and Japan, and highlighted the upcoming treaty to eliminate double taxation and revise an investment pact to enable Japanese firms to join reconstruction projects in Ukraine.

The agreement between the two countries marks a significant milestone in the long-term relationship between Ukraine and Japan. It expresses a commitment from both nations to provide financial and business support to Ukraine as it seeks to rebuild its economy and infrastructure, and reaffirms the importance of addressing the landmine and unexploded ordnance threats that remain a key challenge in the reconstruction effort.
