New Delhi: Iran on Monday announced the launch of a new “regulatory body” for the Strait of Hormuz and unveiled its official X account, formally rolling out Tehran’s new maritime control mechanism for one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
The new body, called the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), was introduced by Iranian officials as a framework to oversee maritime transit and shipping coordination in the Strait of Hormuz.
Shortly after the announcement, the authority launched its official X account: @PGSA_IRAN.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also reposted a post on X announcing that the official account of the “Persian Gulf Strait Authority” was now operational.
“In the Name of God. The official X account of the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (#PGSA) is now live. Follow us for real-time updates on the Hormuz Strait operations and latest developments,” the Persian Gulf Strait Authority said in its post.
At the time of publication, the account had around 22,000 followers and followed 12 handles linked to Iran’s political and military establishment, including those associated with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Brig Gen Ali Jahan Shahi and former parliament speaker Ali Larijani.
Iranian media outlets, including Tasnim News Agency and Fars News Agency, reported that the new authority would manage designated shipping routes and coordinate maritime services linked to vessel movement through the Strait, which Tehran has effectively closed since the start of war with US-Israel.

According to Iranian parliamentarian Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s parliamentary national security and foreign policy committee, the mechanism has been designed within the framework of Iran’s “national sovereignty”.
This route will remain closed to the operators of the so-called ‘freedom project,’ he said in an X post.
The launch of the authority and its social media account comes amid increased Iranian messaging around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.
In recent weeks, Iranian state-linked media and military officials have highlighted Tehran’s role in maintaining security and operational oversight in the region. Reuters reported earlier this month that Iranian officials had expanded their description of the operational area linked to the Strait, stretching from Jask in the east to Siri Island in the west.

In its posts on X, the PGSA described itself as the “legal entity and representative authority” of Iran for managing transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The account also said navigation within the boundaries defined by Iranian authorities would require “full coordination” with the Islamic Republic’s armed forces and relevant agencies, adding that passage without permission would be considered “illegal”.
