MAIDUGURI, Oct 24 (Reuters) – Gunmen killed at least 40 people in an attack on a village in Nigeria’s northeastern Taraba state on Friday afternoon, Amnesty International said.

• A large group of gunmen carried out the attack on Binnari village, police said in a statement on Saturday

• Amnesty International said in a statement that while police had earlier confirmed the killing of 10 people, more bodies were recovered later on Saturday

• The attackers invaded the village with heavy gunfire and looted food items from shops, police said

• Northern Nigeria has experienced a surge in attacks by heavily armed criminal gangs, known locally as bandits, who raid villages, abduct residents for ransom and steal livestock

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
