We bring you some of the headlines from across the world to keep you updated about the latest on Covid-19.

China administers 15 million vaccine doses in a single day

China broke its own record of vaccination after more than 15 million people were inoculated in a single day, reports South China Morning Post.

The accelerated vaccine drive came as a response to local outbreaks of Covid in the port city of Yingkou in the northeastern province of Liaoning.

This was also the sixth consecutive day when China administered more than 10 million vaccine jabs nationwide.

Shao Yiming, a researcher with the China Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and an expert in Covid vaccine development, told a news channel that the country could inoculate as many as 20 million people in a single day if needed.

China has reported 90,908 coronavirus cases and 4,636 deaths so far.

Japan vaccine booking system embarrasses govt

A glitch in Japan’s vaccine booking system that is allowing people to book slots using false information has left the government red-faced, reports The Guardian.

The glitch has come at a time when the government is facing renewed criticism over its handling of the pandemic amid a slow vaccine roll out.

The flaw in the system came to light after some newspaper journalists booked vaccine slots for themselves that were meant for those above the age of 64, using an arbitrary code and application numbers.

Japan has reported 6,87,825 coronavirus cases and 11,591 deaths so far.

Indian expats in Dubai warned against rumours on vaccine for parents

A WhatsApp forward claiming the India embassy in the UAE is seeking applications from people who want to get their parents inoculated on visitor visa is false, reports Gulf News.

The Indian consulate rubbished this WhatsApp forward and urged expatriates to not believe in such communication.

According to Gulf News, the message read: “Ladies and gentlemen, this link is for the Consulate General of India Dubai. We spoke to them a couple of days ago about trying to arrange vaccine for our parents who are on visit visa. When we spoke to them they said if we have enough number of people requesting us, then we can approach the government for arranging vaccination for seniors who are here on visit visa. So please send your messages in … and type out the details and maybe our parents will have a shot or two! (sic).”

The UAE has reported 5,48,681 coronavirus cases and 1,637 deaths so far.

Covid grips Thailand’s prisons

On Tuesday, Thailand reported 9,635 coronavirus cases, the highest number of infections in a single day as Covid rips through the country’s overcrowded prisons, reports CNN.

Of these, 6,873 — more than 70 per cent of the cases — were detected in eight prisons and detention centres across the country.

Thailand is hoping to vaccinate more than three lakh inmates and jail staff on priority.

Thailand’s prison clusters came to light when several pro-democracy leaders, held in pre-trial detention following demonstrations last year, announced they were Covid positive while out on bail.

Thailand has reported 1,16,949 cases and 678 deaths so far
