The Bharatiya Janta Party or the BJP is India’s biggest national party and currently rules the country. It was formed in 1980, though its origins lie in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which was founded in 1951. The BJP has been in power since 2014, with Narendra Modi as India’s prime minister.
An interesting point brought out by Pranab….Gujarat is perhaps the first test of a BJP government facing election where the incumbency factor could go either way. Modi’s image is being packaged as a proxy CM to shield the current incumbent(s). No one knows how far will it work. Modi’s image appears quite bruised compared to the freshness 0f expectations in 2014. Another factor that most analysts are missing out is the swing among the youth who appear fairly disillusioned with no growth in jobs and none in the near horizon. Nevertheless, the opposition is distinctively fractured to take any advantage of the incumbency factor.
