While we talk much about our military, we don’t put our national wallet where our mouth is. Nobody is saying we should double our defence spending, but current declining trend must be reversed.
Mr Haqqani ever since you joined the Hudson Institute you have been on a tear, to jump out of your skin at every opportunity, & play your pitbull role. It is clear you understand the fault lines in Pak politics & society but you’re disingenuous in characterizing your observations to promote a negative perception in the West. You have zero resonance or readership outside of neocon US policy circles. Your thesis here is based on talking to a handful of Ivy PhDs in the World Bank. Since you have been rehabilitated in the wilderness & are in effective exile, it is necessary to keep burnishing your brand in order to earn your keep. You have to ask yourself. Are you doing any good with your narrow perspective? It is instructive how you leave out many increasing positives in Pakistan today. If you were here you would appreciate the wave of optimism & relief at finally having a govt which speaks honestly. When they make mistakes they correct them, but the anglicized liberal elite term these U turns. There are many internal & external problems (fiscal, social, finances, jobs, health, literacy, poverty, water, security) but we are addressing them. In a few years even your vitriol will fall on deaf ears as it becomes less & less believable. You may even decide to relocate back here in your dotage. As for your facile one-dimensional argument about Ahmedis, it is a deeper historical issue than just a religious sect being cast out. It would be time well spent if you investigated the Ahmedi jamaat and its outposts in UK & Israel, to grasp its political tonality. It is not the poor rural Ahmedi in Punjab that is the target of ire, even though the fault lines you know are used by miscreants to foment violence against them. The violence is real, and so is the anger at the jamat’s political machinations under the garb of religion. But you will never highlight this because it would be an awkward truth which is tough to square with your raison d’etre – a litany of diatribes to keep your paycheck going at Hudson.
A brilliant piece by Husain Haqqani like his monumental “Reimagining Pakistan”. Few people have recognized that the emergence of rightwingers in my country i.e. India is also, in a way, linked to Pakistan’s policies of islamic fundamentalism since most of Hindus see Pakistan as persecutors of Hindus with the heady mix of same lot that invaded India in meidival times, ruled with iron hand, destroyed their temples, religious icons, indulged in forcible conversions to islam and so on
It has a sinister fall out as hatred towards muslim of India by Hindus. Politicians are taking advantage of this situation by polarising people on religious lines. India areat constitution but social structures sometimes go awry due tomorrow public sentiments. Thus Pakistan is not only hurting itself but also hurting the social and political fabric of India. It has sleeper cells among Indian Muslims, aided and abetted by Pakistani ISI. Therefore Pakistan has become a dangerous state in the sub continent
