6 clean sheets in 7 matches—Spain conceded just one goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

New Delhi: European champions Spain once again proved to be France’s kryptonite, producing another disciplined and tactically flawless display to defeat Les Bleus 2-0 and book their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New York. In seven matches, La Roja has conceded just once against Belgium in the quarter-final clash, displaying defensive solidity among the back four and the goalkeeper.

By recording six clean sheets, Spain’s defence has completely dismantled some of the most dangerous attacking lineups in the world’s biggest football tournament. Anchored by stalwarts like Unai Simon in goal, and 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte in the back-four line, the defensive masterclass has paved Spain’s path to the World Cup final in New Jersey.

With 65 clearances and eight interceptions, Cubarsi and Laporte produced a commanding performance, completely nullifying France’s star-studded frontline. Kylian Mbappe, the tournament’s joint leading scorer, failed to register a single shot on target as Spain restricted France to one of their most ineffective attacking displays of the competition.

Coming into the semifinal, France were widely considered favourites. With Mbappe on the Golden Boot race with eight goals, Michael Olise topping the assist charts, and Ousmane Dembele in electric form, Didier Deschamps’ side possessed arguably the most feared attack in the tournament.

“There were too many technical errors. We didn’t know how to hurt them when we needed to. It was up to us to shift the balance of power, and that’s where we failed,” Mbappe had said after the match.

Midfield magic

Spain’s defensive structure extended far beyond the back four. Rodri dictated the tempo from deep, while Fabian Ruiz and Dani Olmo constantly linked defence with the attack, ensuring France’s midfield never gained control. Every French transition was quickly smothered, forcing Mbappe and company into isolated moments rather than sustained pressure.

An early penalty won by Lamine Yamal was converted brilliantly by Spain’s leading goal scorer, Mikel Oyarzabal. In the second half, Spain started where they left off, scoring with a brilliantly worked team move, finished by Pedro Porro, doubling their advantage. From there, Spain defended with composure and maturity, never allowing France a route back into the contest.

Former striker and Sweden legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic acknowledged Spain’s performance, praising their defensive midfielder Rodri.

“He’s a player that doesn’t get a lot of credit, gets unseen, but [he] won the Ballon d’Or, which is not normal for the position that he plays in,” Ibrahimovic said after Spain tamed Frane in the semi-final.

He continued to compliment Rodri’s skills, saying that he not only “puts players around him on fire” but can also “put out fires” for his multi-faceted leadership capabilities on the pitch.

Spain will now face either Argentina or England in the final early Monday.
