Found in the Sahara, a meteorite older than Earth itself

The rare meteorite, estimated to be 4.6 billion years old, was found by a team led by Jean-Alix Barrat of Université de Bretagne Occidentale. Results of the study have been published in PNAS.

Bengaluru: A meteorite that landed in the Sahara Desert last year has been dated as being 4.56 billion years old, which makes the volcanic rock older than Earth, which is approximately 4.54 billion years old.

Named Erg Chech 002 (EC 002), after the Algerian site where it was discovered, the rock is a rare artefact from a protoplanet — a large body of matter in orbit around the Sun or another star, and believed to be developing into a planet — that was likely forming when the solar system was a young 2 million years old.

The solar system with all its planets was considered to have evolved to its current structure about 4.57 billion years ago, while the Sun formed first, over 4.6 billion years ago.

The team behind the findings, led by Jean-Alix Barrat of the Université de Bretagne Occidentale, France, speculates that this astronomical body would have either been destroyed or absorbed by bigger rocky planets as they formed closer to the Sun.

The results of the meteorite study were published in the journal PNAS this month.

The meteorite was part of a group that was recovered in May 2020 near Bir Ben Takoul, southern Algeria, within the Erg Chech sand sea. The stones are described as having a “coarse grained, tan and beige appearance” interspersed with crystals that are green, yellow-green, and yellow-brown. They are igneous in nature, which means they formed from molten rock or magma.

A rock like EC 002 is a relic from the very early days of the solar system, and most of the material from the time has since become a part of other bodies that have evolved to form planets or asteroids, from which we have plenty of meteorites today. No known asteroid or meteorite looks like EC 002, indicating how rare the finding is, and how these rocks likely do not exist anymore.

About the meteorite

The rock that makes up the meteorite is of a type called andesite, which is made of solidified magma or lava. These are found on Earth in subduction zones, where tectonic plates slide below each other and rock from the crust enters into the mantle of the Earth. Meteorites have rarely been found to be andesites.

EC 002 is classified as an achondrite, a type of meteorite that originates from a parent body that had a differentiated crust and core, like the rocky planets. Achondrites lack ‘chondrules’, which are round bubble-like grains of partially molten droplets that form in space when smaller bits of rock merge together. This piece of rock is believed to have come from partly molten magma in its parent body’s crust and is rich in silica, while most magma is rich in iron.

It is also categorised as ungrouped, which means that although its characteristics are well-defined, they don’t fall into any established groups of meteorites.

According to the researchers, their analysis shows that the rock was likely the part of a crust of an ancient protoplanet or early rocky planet that eventually broke up. The magma that EC 002 formed out of would have been at least 1,220°C and taken at least 1,00,000 years to cool and solidify.

  1. 4.6 billion years! It’s less than a million years ago….no wait…..yeah 1.125 million years ago….nooooo….1.126…yeah that’s it. Smh

  2. I think science and the bible both are true in science yea they talk about light years and bible 6 days but do you know how long is one day for god?

  3. If it is older than earth, then how it is found in earth itself. Metiorite are found in earth when they fall or enter earth gravity.

  4. Still man is selfish already polluted earth now he wants land in Moon, Mars etc planets. Our great Religious Heads definitely creat caste religion pollution in every planet. Animals birds are better than men and women

  5. Well when you look at what the Bible says, you begin to understand what really happened back when the planets were formed by GOD. I’m sorry to burst bubbles here, but GOD did everything in a matter of 6 days, and on the 7th day, HE rested.

  6. fools meteorite is older than earth but it landed on earth last year. So PLZZ those asking stupid question, read the article carefully and don’t insult theirs brain , if they have!!

    • Did you read the article…..it says in the article that this apparent meteor got absorbed into the earth during the formation of the solar system

    • Ummmm, it traveled around in space after its creation, which was BEFORE Earths creation, and then it landed on Earth after traveling around in the galaxy/universe for 4.6 billion years…..i thought they explained it fairly well lol

    • Meteorites don’t get created when they land on Earth. It’s just science, This is exactly why proper education is needed for reading such articles.

  7. Earth is 4.54 billon years old and this thing is 4.6 billion years. So can this be older than Earth? This news is rushed to publishing that they didn’t even considering rechecking with a Geologist?

    • Why can’t it be older than the earth ?? It was formed, travelled the universe for millions of years and landed on earth after it formed.

    • Um, things can exist in space prior to Earths creation and then land after Earth is formed…..i dont get why so many people on here cant grasp that lol….they never said its been on Earth 4.6 billion years, it was formed prior to Earths creation and then crashed here some time after that…..

  8. First learn to take care of the earth first. Can humans last another one thousand years? At the present rate of pollution and depleting natural resources?

      • To whom you are asking this question ? To Bien, Putin, Zhang , Imran Khan or Our own Modiji ? Human beings are very late-comers on earth ! They have very little knowledge about the earth, the forces those created our planet the mechanism this planetary system is stable or the forces those can destroy this ! Human beings are saviours of this planet only in American fiction and cinemas/web serials ! Be cool, don’t worry

  9. This is a great finding. A rock that old can give us a lot more info about confirming theories about formation of planets and initial matters formed in the universe.

I wonder if this meteorite was a one-off event or such meteorites fell in multiple places on Earth in close timeframe. If it disintegrated from an older planet, there might be other rocks on similar orbital trajectory.

Overall, I enjoyed this article – thanks for covering it. I would have really appreciated if you had mentioned a bit more about the authors of PNAS article, what they are working on and what do they seek from this finding.

  10. The space is full of darkness an void of life and other than our moon Noone will ever go to any other planet I hope Noone is offered but we would be better off discovering what’s right here on earth because I don’t know anyone who is wanting to risk there life and go away on a trip to a place they may never return we have no reason to was tax dollars on exploring our outer limits and as much I’d love to know what’s out there the space is full of darkness and void of life !!!

  11. May be human carbon dating calculations wrong .
We know that all time ,theories , formulas are invented for our human
Satisfaction and for our daily life know?
No one can tell that it is accurate , right?

  12. May be human carbon dating calculations wrong .
We know that all time ,theories , formulas are invented for our human
Satisfaction and for our daily life know?
No one can tell it is accurate, correct.

  13. i can laugh all day how someone gives a personal opinion as a main one and promote it like the knowledge of origin and year..who are you selling those nonesense, with what did you measure that and with what..this is totally desinforming nation

    • re-read the article. It clearly states that the meteorite recently fell to Earth. It was floating in space until it finally fell in the Sahara desert last year.

    • This meteorite is older than earth as per artical sayes.it may be true that it was formed before the earth formation.it meight have took billion of years to fall on earh .it meight be in trnsformation period to reach on earth.

    • The meteorite was still in the Expanse of the universe drifting to no place specifically! After the earth was formed, it fell to the Earth and was discovered by the French scientists. It existed much before the earth and fell on the earth later.
