New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Bihar minister Nitin Nabin as its national working president.
An official order issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh said the appointment was approved by the party’s Parliamentary Board. Though the party has not yet clarified whether he will also assume the responsibility of the national president, or if an announcement on the national president will be made later.
“The BJP Parliamentary Board has appointed Shri Nitin Nabin, Minister, Government of Bihar, as the National Working President of the Bharatiya Janata Party with immediate effect,” the order read.
Nabin will replace J.P. Nadda. Nadda had also been appointed the national working president as an understudy before being named the full-fledged president. He was appointed the working president of the BJP on 17 June, 2019. The appointment was made after Amit Shah, the then-party president, became a Union minister. Shah remained the national president until Nadda was elected as the full-fledged national president on 20 January, 2020. The party fought a number of elections with Nadda as working president.
Similarly, in 2001, after the resignation of Bangaru Laxman, then BJP president, K. Jana Krishnamurthy was named the acting president, a position that was later ratified by the party.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nabin and said that he has been a hardworking party worker. “Shri Nitin Nabin Ji has distinguished himself as a hardworking karyakarta. He is a young and industrious leader with rich organisational experience and has an impressive record as MLA as well as Minister in Bihar for multiple terms. Last month, Nabin won the high-profile Bankipur assembly constituency in Patna district in the Bihar assembly polls, defeating Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Rekha Kumari by a margin of over 51,000 votes.
Nabin’s father, Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha had also won the seat multiple times. “He contested the 2006 by-elections after the death of his father, and since then has been winning the seat. He is someone who is an organisation man and the party reposed its faith in him after he delivered in Chhattisgarh assembly elections,” said a senior BJP leader. Nabin has served as the party in-charge for Chhattisgarh.
He holds the road construction portfolio in Bihar cabinet. The party has not yet said anything about whether he will continue to serve as the minister.
Nabin has also served as the national general secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha. “His father had Jan Sangh connections. He was the co-in-charge of the BJP in Chhattisgarh during the state assembly elections. After the 2018 defeat, the BJP made a remarkable comeback in the 2023 assembly elections, returning to power. Nabin ji played a crucial role in this victory, which resulted in the party rewarding him by making him the in-charge of Chhattisgarh before the Lok Sabha elections,” said a party functionary.
The BJP’s performance in Chhattisgarh in the general election was also remarkable, with the party winning 10 of the 11 parliamentary seats in the state.
Home Minister Shah also congratulated Nabin. “Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, National President Shri @JPNadda ji, and the senior leaders of the BJP Parliamentary Board—I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Shri Nitin Nabin ji on his appointment as the National General Secretary by them,” he wrote in a post on X.
Praising Nabin, Shah said that be it the role of National General Secretary of BJP Yuva Morcha, or that of the state president of the Youth Wing in Bihar, or state in-charge for Chhattisgarh, Nabin has fulfilled every responsibility with complete dedication and success.
“In Bihar, having served five times as a legislator and as a minister in the state government, he possesses extensive experience of working among the people. His elevation today to the position of National General Secretary is an honour for every young BJP worker who toils day and night. I extend my best wishes to him for his new responsibility and successful tenure,” he added.
If Nabin goes on to become a full-fledged president of the BJP, he will be the youngest one.
A Kayasth by caste, Nabin entered politics after the demise of his father and, sources said, the late Sushil Kumar Modi, senior BJP leader who served as the deputy chief minister of Bihar, had suggested Nabin’s name as the party’s candidate for the bypolls.
Bihar BJP president and Industries Minister Dr Dilip Jaiswal said this appointment is a gift to Bihar, following the NDA’s massive victory in the state. He said it is a matter of pride that, for the first time, a leader from Bihar has been elevated to such a key role at national level.
Speaking to ThePrint, Devesh Kumar, member of Bihar legislative council, called him an organisation man who understands people, and is soft-spoken. “He served as the Bihar BJYM chief when Nityanand Rai was the president of Bihar and left a mark. He is a great organisation man and understands people. He has an amiable personality, and has proved his acumen as an administrator as he has held charge of important ministries, such as Urban Development and road construction. As an organisation man, he has also left his mark as the prabhari of Chattisgarh.”
A senior BJP leader said, “He started his political career from the BJYM, and went on to assume key responsibilities within the organisation. He does not have an RSS background, but his family was associated with the Jan Sangh.”
