New Delhi: After sparking a controversy over Hindi being used as a common language in India, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has now raised questions on whether multi-party democracy has succeeded in the country.
Speaking at an event organised by the All India Management Association in the capital, Shah said seven decades after Independence, the people of India were disappointed in multi-party democracy.
“Seventy (sic) years after independence, the people of the nation had doubts in their mind if the multi-party parliamentary democratic system has failed,” Shah said.
He said the makers of the Constitution had adopted this system after studying various democracies around the world, so that people could get equal rights, but added: “Will it help in building an India envisioned by the framers of our Constitution? There is huge disappointment.”
Attack on Congress
Shah took a swipe at the Congress and the UPA government it led from 2004-2014, saying it was afraid of taking bold decisions. “As a result, borders were insecure and soldiers were beheaded. There used to be news of corruption every day. The government was politically paralysed,” he said.
“Till 2013, there was a government where every minister considered himself prime minister, but did not think of the prime minister as the prime minister.”
He also alleged that the Congress government would be unable to name five big decisions it took.
“They worked for 30 years (sic) and still they can’t name five big decisions, while the Modi government has worked for five years and has 50 decision to talk about,” he said.
“We have taken tough decisions like the surgical strikes and the (Balakot) air strike. Those were tough decisions. We won’t compromise with one inch of land,” Shah continued.
“The air strike and surgical strike has changed the way world looks at us. A lot of people told me surgical strikes were a fluke, but after the air strike, they said it is policy.”

On Kashmir
Speaking on the abrogation of Article 370, Shah said: “People always wondered about how can this be done. From 5 August to 17 September, not a single bullet has been fired in Jammu and Kashmir. We have maintained peace there, without firing a single bullet.”
who is amit shah let him get elected without EVM he will be thrown out what he thinks of himself throw bjp out
Shah will be way waaaaaay worse than Modi : he dreams of being the baadshah shahensha samrat of Bharat . a lot of misery and bloodbath will happen if this megalomaniac continues the way he started.
Mr Shah doesn”t realise that in any Govt some decisions turn out good and some bad. The good decisions by the MOdi govt have all been outweighed by the single blunder of demonetisation. Similarly , many good schemes of the MMS Govt existed , but they were balanced by the inept handling of the 2G spectrum allocation process. But you can”t go on cribbing about the various failures of previous Govts. This Govt now has to answer for the terrible state of the economy and show that it can turn things around.’
He is only expounding the RSS view about what kind of nation India should be. After the recent Lok Sabha victory the wolf is shedding its sheep’s clothing.
Bold decision by a minority government. These guys are the ones who did not allow any decisions to be made. Remember the time when these guys were stalling parliament.
Amit Shah sounds and acts like a pugalist than an enlightened politician. Modi might find that he is ill served in the long run by the likes of Amit Shah. I like Modi, but is turned off by the likes of Shah. There could be millions like me. Let not Mr. Modi be a two term PM.
On the question of hindi, we have had several pushes by hindi chauvinists in the past. Instead of an united India, the results were divided India. India is more than 5,000 years old and has survived as a single country (may not be in the modern sense) despite myriad languages, cultures, etc. There is something divine in “unity in diversity”. Our neighbor Pakistan pushed for a single national language Urdu — result Bangladesh. Why don’t our hindi chauvinists learn from history?
Brutalizing 8 million Kashmiri Muslims and taking away the rights of all Kashmiri people which were guaranteed by the Indian Constitution may be termed a big decision. But it is not a right decision. In 1971, Pakistani Army Chief Yahya Khan made a big decision against Awami League by starting Operation Searchlight. However, it was not a right decision. Hitler of Nazi Germany had made many big decisions but caused great sufferings to humanity and his own people as well. Big decisions are determined by its consequences. The formation of United Nations and the European Union are really big decisions which have helped the humanity at large..
It is unforunate that one needs no educational qualifications to become a ‘neta’, people like sengar , chinmayanand and others with several criminal cases can become a ‘neta ‘.Amit Shah is probably right , multiparty democracy is not much use , a criminal in congress when he crosses over , the color of his blood changes , character changes and what not .
A person who has no knowledge of Indian history. Kabir had rightly said a person should keep his mouth shut otherwise you expose your intellect.
Acting PM? Talks too much without know-how or authority.
