Are you stuck in a toxic relationship? How long should you try? The proverbial saying ‘you yuan wu fen’ refers to couples who were fated to come together, but not destined to remain together.

The choice to divorce belongs to the individual in the relationship. The only other person best placed to offer perspective is the partner. People outside the marriage should not drive this decision, because they often cannot fully understand the private realities and complexities of the relationship.

When Is the Final Call?

After taking the LOVE Test, if you score 15–44 points = The thrill is gone

Rome was not built in a day. Nor is marriage eroded overnight. Fractures are already present. Divorce is the final straw that breaks the camel’s back. Look out for these seven red flags:

  • You cannot trust them.
  • You have drifted apart.
  • You have stopped caring.
  • Your values are not aligned.
  • Your basic needs are not being met.
  • You cannot be your authentic self around them.
  •  You do not feel at peace; it no longer feels like home.

How many of these feel true for you? If more than five apply, it may be time to seriously reflect on the direction of the marriage and decide your next steps.

Deciding when to pursue a divorce requires an honest self-reflection about your emotional well-being and the state of the relationship. Several key signs may indicate that the marriage is no longer healthy or fulfilling. A constant lack of peace at home is a strong warning sign.

When the atmosphere feels tense instead of calm, and conflict replaces harmony, it may point to a deeper breakdown in the relationship. If your home no longer feels like a place of comfort and belonging, the marriage may no longer be serving its purpose as a safe and supportive space. When you feel unable to be your true self in a relationship, it weakens its foundation. A healthy marriage should feel safe enough for honesty and authenticity without fear of judgement or rejection. If you often feel guarded or forced to hide who you are around your partner, it may signal a deep disconnect between you.

Another key factor is the alignment of core values. When basic beliefs and priorities differ widely, it can create deep and lasting conflict. Such gaps often weaken the foundation of the relationship and make shared growth and understanding difficult. When essential emotional, physical, spiritual or psychological needs aren’t being met, it creates a gap that’s hard to close. Trust, a cornerstone of any relationship, can break down through neglect or betrayal, making the challenges even harder to overcome.

When these signs keep appearing, and efforts to repair the relationship fail, it may show that divorce is a reasonable option. While divorce is a deeply personal and complex choice, noticing these warning signs can help you understand when it might be time to take this important step for your emotional health and personal growth.

When someone truly loves you, their biggest fear is hurting you.
When someone loves how you make them feel, their biggest fear is losing you.
