The word biohacking is everywhere today. From Silicon Valley entrepreneurs tracking every sleeping minute to women wearing smart rings, monitoring glucose and taking unnecessary supplements. Some have even started experimenting with cold plunges, fasting and red-light therapy—the desire to “hack” our biology has become one of the biggest wellness movements of our time.
But as a doctor, I believe we need to pause before getting carried away by the glamour of the word.
For me, biohacking is not about becoming a machine. It is about understanding your biology well enough to make smarter decisions.
Understanding biohacking
At its simplest, biohacking means using lifestyle changes, technology, nutrition and sometimes medical interventions to optimise health, performance and wellbeing.
The spectrum is enormous. On one end are simple, evidence-based habits: better sleep, exercise, protein intake, stress management and sun protection. On the other are expensive supplements, hormone experimentation, extreme fasting and unregulated treatments. That distinction is important.
The skin is perhaps our most visible biofeedback device.
As a dermatologist, I often tell my patients: your skin is constantly giving you information.
A sudden breakout may reflect stress, hormonal shifts, cosmetic irritation or lifestyle changes. Increased pigmentation may tell us something about sun exposure or inflammation. Dryness can be related to weather, skincare practices, ageing and underlying health. Hair fall can sometimes be an early clue that something in the body deserves attention.
We often look at the skin as a cosmetic surface. I look at it as a biological interface.
This is where intelligent biohacking becomes interesting. Rather than asking, “What is the newest miracle treatment?”, perhaps we should ask, “What is my body trying to tell me?”
For example, before investing in ten supplements, expensive IV drips, or the latest longevity gadget, start by tracking the basics: sleep, exercise, protein and fibre intake, stress management, and sun exposure.
These may sound boring compared to a futuristic wearable device. But boring biology often works better than fashionable biology.
Boring biohacks 101
My first biohack for the skin: protect what you already have.
The beauty industry has made anti-ageing sound complicated. It doesn’t have to be.
One of the most powerful forms of skin biohacking is preventing unnecessary damage. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection, avoiding tanning, maintaining the skin barrier and using scientifically supported skincare ingredients can do more for long-term skin quality than constantly chasing the latest trend.
We cannot stop ageing. But we can influence environmental ageing. That is why I often say that prevention is the original anti-ageing treatment.
A watch can tell you how well you slept. A skin scanner can map pigmentation. Artificial intelligence can increasingly help analyse patterns. But technology should support good decisions, not replace them.
The goal is not to become obsessed with data. The goal is to understand patterns. As a doctor, I love data, but I also respect its limitations.
Wearables have made health tracking incredibly accessible. We can now monitor sleep, activity, heart-rate trends and recovery patterns from devices on our wrists and fingers.
Used intelligently, this can be empowering.
But there is a danger in assuming that every number is a diagnosis.
A smart ring is not your physician. A skin app is not a dermatologist. An abnormal number on a wearable does not automatically mean disease—and a reassuring number does not guarantee health.
This is why the future of biohacking must be guided by doctors rather than influencers.
Data without context can create anxiety. Data interpreted intelligently can create change. The female biohacking conversation needs to become more honest.

Biohacking for women
As a woman, I find the biohacking conversation particularly interesting because our biology is often more dynamic than the wellness industry acknowledges.
Hormones, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, stress, sleep and nutritional demands can all influence how a woman feels, and sometimes how her skin and hair behave.
Yet women are constantly sold a confusing mixture of anti-ageing promises.
Take this supplement. Fast longer. Eliminate carbohydrates. Take hormones because someone on social media says they transformed her energy. Follow a 20-year-old influencer’s skincare routine.
My advice is simple: your biology is not a trend.
What works for a 25-year-old male entrepreneur may not be appropriate for a woman in her 40s navigating hormonal changes, work stress and changing body composition.
For women, intelligent biohacking should begin with listening rather than controlling. Track patterns if they are useful. Notice sleep, energy, changes in skin, hair and mood. Discuss significant changes with a qualified doctor instead of self-prescribing your way through social media.
The most powerful biohack may sometimes be understanding that your body does not need to perform like someone else’s.
Beware of supplement stacking
This is where I become particularly cautious as a physician.
The modern wellness world has created “supplement stacks”—multiple capsules, powders, adaptogens, nootropics, peptides and longevity compounds taken together, often without medical supervision.
More is not necessarily better.
Supplements can interact with medications, with each other and with underlying medical conditions. Marketing language can also run far ahead of scientific evidence.
I am not anti-supplement. I am anti-random supplementation.
If you have a deficiency, treat the deficiency. If there is a genuine medical indication, address it. But taking twenty products because someone calls it a “longevity stack” is not sophisticated medicine.
It is often expensive guesswork.
My definition of good biohacking
After years of seeing patients worried about ageing, pigmentation, hair loss, acne and wellness, my approach to biohacking is becoming simpler.
Good biohacking should make your life healthier—not more anxious.
It should be measurable, but not obsessive. Personalised, but not unnecessarily complicated. Scientific, but humble enough to admit when evidence is still evolving.
My own hierarchy would look something like this:
First, sleep.
Then nutrition.
Movement and muscle strength.
Stress management.
Sun protection.
Good skincare.
Understanding your hormones and health appropriately.
Then, if necessary, select technology, treatments and supplements. The sequence matters.
There is little point in spending a fortune on longevity technology while sleeping four hours a night, eating poorly, never exercising and ignoring the basics of skin health.

The future is personalised—not extreme
Biohacking will become a major part of preventive medicine and dermatology. We will increasingly use AI-assisted analysis, wearables, imaging, biomarkers and personalised lifestyle strategies to understand individuals better.
But the best biohack of the future may not be a chip under the skin or an expensive machine.
It may simply be learning to combine technology with common sense. As a doctor, I want evidence.
As a dermatologist, I want to protect the skin and understand what it reveals. And as a woman, I want health optimisation without becoming a prisoner of optimisation.
Perhaps that is the real biohack: using science and technology to understand ourselves better—without forgetting that we are human.
