Rahul Gandhi is back. Now with two economists, a migrant aid pack and an ethical hacker

Rahul Gandhi’s chats with Raghuram Rajan and Abhijit Banerjee, along with Zoom press conferences clearly indicate that the Congress leader is in a comeback mode.

It takes a lot to be defeated twice over, ridiculed for years and still care enough to show up for your country, the majority of which has rejected you for a national leadership role. Rahul Gandhi continues to surprise us. He simply won’t give up. He just doesn’t turn cynical and walk away.

He keeps coming back with his empathy as well as his willingness to find viable solutions to pressing issues induced by the pandemic: an economy in doldrums, a huge migrant workers’ problem that’s slowly turned into a humanitarian crisis as well as transparency of the government’s Arogya Setu app being used to map Covid positive patients. Rahul Gandhi’s comeback is all the more conspicuous against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unwillingness to have a press conference.

Rahul is ready to talk

Rahul Gandhi is the eternal unputdownable comeback kid. He has managed to hold the attention of the media by continuously participating in the process of finding answers to the problems that Covid has thrown at India. He has had two conversations with two economists par excellence, former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan and Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee. Add to this, the migrant aid pack that Sonia Gandhi offered, where the Congress party would have paid the train fare for every migrant labourer who wants to go home. This “masterstroke” has made the fiercest of critics of the Congress party applaud the Gandhis. The Gandhis are consciously and conspicuously placing themselves polar opposite to Narendra Modi. Whatever Modi is avoiding, the Gandhis are accepting and dealing squarely.

Right-wing editorials are claiming that Rahul Gandhi is trying to come off as an “intellectual”. This, for a man who till recently they caustically made fun of. But this perception is cracking because for the first time, the entire BJP PR machinery is being used to not make fun of Rahul Gandhi, but to discredit his interactions with the two economists by either calling the interaction a “repackaged Socialist snake oil” or by spinning fake news related to the guests. MoneyControl.com and News18 misquoted Abhijit Bannerjee as criticising UPA’s schemes, which the BJP had embraced. Banerjee had said no such thing.

Ending obsession with Modi

Then there’s Rahul Gandhi’s two press conferences (via Zoom). We got to see a visibly more calmer and zen Rahul Gandhi who is neither shaken nor stirred by the six-year-long vicious slander by the BJP or the media, which has more often than not dealt rather unfairly with him. He has significantly altered his behaviour from the Rahul of yore, who would either attack Modi with his ‘Chowkidar Chor hai’ jibe or give him a hug in Parliament and say that he loves the prime minister.

Rahul’s detachment from Modi is palpable when he urges the government to transfer direct cash to the poor, as envisaged in Congress’s NYAY scheme, by saying “Call it ‘nyay’ (justice) or call it by any other name but do it.”

Rahul, it appears, has specifically distanced himself from acts of political pettiness and his statements reflect a sense of political maturity: “We can defeat the virus if we fight it together, we lose if we fight with each other”. Even though he also unapologetically added that he does not agree with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on most things but wanted to offer “constructive suggestions”.

Gandhi’s well-directed tweets with suggestions to the government are now also being affirmed by experts.

Turning Aarogya to his advantage

While the BJP is in pathological denial of anything substantive that Rahul Gandhi or the two economists had to say, an ethical hacker had the government promptly take notice and admit to its mistake. French hacker Elliot Alderson on Twitter looked into the Aarogya Setu app and confirmed Rahul’s fear that it was nothing more than a “sophisticated surveillance system”. The app’s user agreement states that the data can be used in the future for purposes other than epidemic control if there is a legal requirement. The privacy policy of the app states that the data on the app may be shared with as many agencies as the government sees fit.

Alderson went on to confirm and tweeted to the government that “A security issue has been found in your app. The privacy of 90 million Indians is at stake.” He ended the tweet with a post script that read; “@Rahul Gandhi was right.”

Although the Modi government confirmed that there could be no security breach in the app, they thanked the ethical hacker on engaging with them. Alderson on the other hand has confirmed that some of the issues he reported were fixed in the app and that he did receive calls from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (ICERT), both government bodies.

In fact the press note of Aarogya Setu thanked Alderson for engaging with them. “We thank the ethical hacker on engaging with us. We encourage any users who identify a vulnerability to inform us immediately.” Alderson, however, maintained that the app should “stop lying, stop denying”.

Rahul’s initial warning, as early as 12 February, foreboding the government of ignoring the contagion almost seems prophetic today. The BJP can go on to dismiss him but it’s getting harder for the party and the government to ignore Rahul in these Covid times.

  1. Somebody who is seductively provoking him an insider for sure. He is behaving like an underage kid with a narsicisstic behaviour. Congress should windup and let the Gandhis leave the country. let alternates like AAP, JDU take up larger roles. better to unprint this one.

  3. This is Indian culture to bear person like Rahul. Still his Gang says that we are intolerance. Everyone knows well what is being done in China with such type of Baseless and disturbing elements. India needs Rulings like China to eleminate lot of Anti Nationals. At least 10 years Military Rules as told by Sri Subhash Chandra Bose.

  4. Stop praising jokers. Thanks guy simply lacks the ability to learn. It would be the worst thing for the country to have him as a leader. And,instead of playing around at this time , he should be distributing the huge money his family has accumulated over the years.
Any I don’t have words to describe the people who are projecting him as a leader opposite Mr Modi……we all understand.

  5. Dear Mr Chetan Sharma. Just answer few questions: 1.why could not Rahul Gandhi led his party to win 2014 and 2019 Parluamant election. So he would have been the PM of the country and would have been calling the shots
    2. Where was he when there were corruptions galore, like CWG, Coalgate, etc ?
    3. Why he failed to lead his party as Congress Chairman?

  6. Our so called journalists are busy in promoting a useless thing after its expiry date with a hope that they will get something from the owner of that product .

    • Give him a chance? Rahul Gandhi says the Congress would have provided Free Travel for the Migrant workers. Why has he not arranged the same facility to give Free Travel by Bus to the Migrant workers in the 3 States where his party is ruling? It is easy to give advice, talk big that being Charitable is noble. But are your States pockets that full that you can afford it? Do the needful for the Migrants from your State coffers and Mr. Modi will find a way to follow to follow your advice.

    • Pappu’s efforts to get painted as an intellectual has always been a terrible failure with his limited competence. Video conferencing with world renowned economists will not help, one of them when he held a powerful position in d country did nothing good, for d country.

  7. The time when the opposition should be standing with the govt shoulder to shoulder they r finding ways to demoralizing it and popping up new issues instead of resolving it . How many congress ruled states r corona free?? . Ask them any logical question they can’t answer without throwing ink on others shame on indian politics .

The one who thinks that son of a king should be a king that person should give up democracy thoughts. What else makes Rahul Gandhi the successor of Congress ??

    • Why can’t questions be asked? Why can’t we ask about the date chosen to enforce lockdown? Did astrologers suggest? The best time to enforce lockdown was around Holi when most of the migrants were at their homes. This could had avoided many human tragedies.

    • If BJP government under Modiji was serious, why Modiji did not come forward to from national government consisting of all CMs and leaders from all parties. A corona war cabinet could have taken Collective decisions in national interest

  8. Selective journalism at his best . Nyay is dum and nutty idea told by mr Shekhar Gupta . All your four point fantesy will remain in your heart. Never reached out of your desk.

  9. Oh! look, another propaganda piece by the media on payroll of the Italian mafia in India. This time they’re trying to paint RaGa as the messiah of Indian economy who will bring his two angels from heaven to release us from the burdens of economic depression but their easily penetrable defensive curtain for presenting a nincompoop as an intellectual will fail miserably because the man can’t calculate basic mathematical problems on the go along with ridiculous speeches and zero leadership skills.

    • You have hit the nail right on spot. This guy’s using his ‘Terminator’ fantasy to present the comeback of a nincompoop. Even if the PM is not a god in himself, his concepts about India as a nation are 100% driven by the need to make India great. Unlike the post 1947 managers till 2014 who carried forward the British plan to keep the nation weak after they’d left. That is why all those who rob India end up settling down in the UK

  10. Well wishes of Rahul farji Gandhi, like Sonia sena, Ghulams, Shekar Gupta etc must know that Raul Farji Gandhi will never be P M of India no Chance. People are not willing to have a Dumbo, Buffoon, looters, Cheaters, divider as PM. Shekar Gupta should use his good office and get back all the looted and cheated money of poor people from sonia Sena , associates and ghulams from many decades. Shekar guitar you are seen as a power broker not as a journal.

  11. He is a comeback kid. In the past 15 years, I have red maanu articles claiming that Rahul Gandhi has come of age. This one is just one of those articles. Poor fellow is almost 50 and has not come of age yet.

He could have learnt a thing or two about economics from Dr. Manmohan Singh. All these interviews are not going to help. Continue with your wet dreams. It will never be fulfilled.

  12. I am appalled but not shocked at most of the replies are rahul bashing I was never a supporter of the Cong or BJP .. let us @least once applaud RG for bringing up the issue especially the blue collor issue ( hate the word migrants it’s so degrading ) they build your homes carry loads sell u vegetables ferry u across and we treat them like dirt..!!! I only wonder what is the funds donated to the PM cares fund for… it’s the govt mistake to impose lockdown overnite.. this is it demonetisation !! Its about people management they shold have given 72 hours for people to go back home organise buses transport and not leave them stranded that’s not done its inhumane ..they are our people why are they being treated like cattle oppps wrong word..they are treated with care @ least they are thank god.. u pen liquor shops what for to run the country on pocket change.. Instead of wasting time clapping , playing with your electric switch on n off making the doc n nurses stand outside in a a photo off and shower petals if you want to thank them …keep them alive and safe .. give them the PPE suits .make them ..buy them import them do what ever it takes these are our frontliners, sending them off to fight without anything !! An appeal please keep politics out of these moments . If we cant be of help to these superstars @least stay away , at home till this passes we owe it to them . JAI HIND…

    • Sensible response moving away from personalities. The supporters of the Ruling Party are entirely in their rights to put forth their views on various issues but they shall offer space for others too. Japanese say that “any feedback is a GIFT???? to the, Receiver”.

    • Not interested in anything anyone with a fake Gandhi surname has to say or offer. Way too much love lost and far too many dynasts seen. As far as his methods and solutions are concerned, any person reading a newspaper on a daily basis could blabber about migrant, economy and pandemic problems. Simply not interested

  13. Rahul is unfit for a PM role. I don’t understand which fool vote for Rahul.rahul and Gandhi family has move out of poltics

  14. More gimmick Rahul try to do, more popular Modi becomes. Rahul is already a rejected leader. If Congress wants to do better, anybody outside the family should take over. The familys creditability is at seabed. The way things are moving now it seems Modi again in 2024.

  16. RahulG is a comedian. His main job during the crisis is to make people of India laugh every day.

    • Modi is a very weakest PM in indian history ….we all are suffering today because of Modi govt and his Bjp supporter …Rahul is doing good thing for corona …but Modi speaking lies ? promise …tv preaching…and evm machine PM

  17. After more than 40 days of lockdown , we are no better than we started , if the PM had in end of January itself taken note of the coming pandemic in our country , then it would be another story , Rahul Gandhi had warned of coming disaster , but arrogant PM and BJP dismissed the warning , the Govt. were busy beating up college girls for and ladies protesting CAA and NRC , then Govt., was busy contesting Delhi elections using every dirty trick , then the Govt., was busy promoting Delhi Riots , were more than 60 people were murdered by Govt., parallely the Govt., was also busy welcoming another baffoon from USA by spending 100 Corores of public money in his welcome rally , and if that was not enough the BJP Govt., was busy in buying 24 MLA’s of Congress party in Madhya Pradesh , the PM was so.. busy in the above activities , where is the poor man got the time to pay attention earlier on th incoming pandemic , infact we should all be grateful and feel under the PM’s obligation that the PM atlast did give authotarian and unilateral instructions for fight against Covid – 19 , now what a terrific decision , after more than 40 days of lockdown , the PM decides to send all the migrants home to their native place , which puts all the citizens who had by following lockdown rules brought the virus in control with many districts and villages not having a single positive case for more than 20 days or more are now at high risk as migrants mostly from red zone areas are being transported to green or orange zone areas , brilliant plan , of course the migrants could have been permitted to go to their native around 19 th March , then the whole country today wouldn’t be at risk again , ofcourse anyone or anybody in BJP is never going to agree to their own facts, how are they going to listen to experts with Rahul Gandhi , as it is our PM does not have this bad habit of listening to others (:

    • Yes Rahul, You are on Right Way. We Respect your Sincerity. The people of India who want
Existence of Secular Democratic India Will Support you.

    • Either you are dumb or do not read what All otrher countries are to fight corona virus. It is the migrants who decided to go back not Modi.Just grow up and pappu you think knows it All?Pappu has never had a formal education or a real job and keeps going to Italy for vacations?Keep dreaming man?

  18. I am seeing for last 12 years, abput RaGa.
    1. Warrior prince.
    2. Rahul back with bang
    3. Rahul has come of age.

Despite vicious propaganda by Con-gress party and their supporters, Rahul couldn’t prove himself. He has even lost popular support. Loss in Amethi is a proof of that.
As a functioning democracy, we need strong and constructive opposition which only Con-gress can provide. But, they have to dump Gandhi-Vadra family and promote good leaders like Sachin Pilot, Capt. Amarinder Singh,. Else, they also will leave this family enterprise and join ruling party like Scindia.

  19. Can any youngster of this country look upon Rahul Gandhi as his idol or a role model . Has he got any qualities which enables him for that ?
Then what is the purpose in flogging a dead horse ?

    • Rahul is no model. Pogrom executing hate mongering intolerant begot Modi is the model. That is India of the day! !

      • Dr Joji Cherian:

I so fully agree with you Sir.

Sadly, for members of the Modi cult, their Delhi University graduate with a pogrom under his belt is unrivalled, unmatched and the only font of leadership in the country. Yes, a man who was formed in an organisation that extolled Adolf Hitler is their hero. But then, walk into any bookstore in India, you will find Hitler’s Mein Kampf being prominently displayed. And the avearge, middle class Indian will tell you that a “benevolent” dictator is what India needs.

        Sad but very true.

      • Rahul? Not fit to be anywhere near PM chair, leave alone s minister.Stop looking at him fir survival. If cong. Wins, it will not be because of Rahul, it will be because people will be fed up if BJP. There are while bunch if people in Congress who can be PM. Leave Rahul alone, He is out of place and it shows in his behaviour and appearance. Stop playing with him for the enjoying benefits of power.

    • You are trying to project a senior clown as a trapeze star. Whatever Rahul may say or do ,people expect only laughter from him. From kids to senior citizens alike, they enjoy his pranks. Modi laughs uncontrollably. At 50+ it will become more and more difficult for him to show himself as as youth leader even with new hair style (or is it a wig?).

  20. Arre, at least tag “sponsored” content properly. Went thru the advertorial before realising what it is.

  21. With all due respect to Mr Rahul Gandhi, we wish him to make comeback again and again till he reaches 100s years and still be called yuvraj of Congress.. The problem of some journalists is they think that they have power to change the opinion of the country by presenting a strong case for Mr Gandhi and Mr Gandhi shows his creditability and credential when he opens his mouth. I am not a bhakt but I apply my mind, I vote for INC on local MLA credential but won’t let Mr Gandhi to be called my PM. If the journalist still thinks that he has the power to change the direction of the wind then he deserves a seat next to Mr Gandhi..

    • The trouble, the fact is that Rahul Gandhi, unlike Modi is not evil. He can not survive where evil prevails over goodness.

      • Modi supporter can not tolerate if some one speak anything about Govt…..in indian History very weak PM is Modi…with fake mangement along with TV news channel….such a fraud Govt . ..because of MODI BHAKTS MOST people will die ? ACCHA DIN ANEWALA HAI ….he betrayed

      • Rahul? Not fit to be anywhere near PM chair, leave alone s minister.Stop looking at him fir survival. If cong. 22. I have been analyzing the comments on the Print for the last month (lockdown tha, time tha). The general trend is that if you vilify Mr. Modi even with logical, sound arguments, you’ll get negative comments. If you lionize Mr. RaGa, the result remains the same. I’m not a big fan of our Pappu, but pray tell me one fact that is wrong in this article? None. Yet, most of the comments imply as if the author is a sold-out, without any reasoning. I used to be a bigger Bhakt, but then I started to think. It’s time other Bhakts do so too. Doesn’t matter if you hate RaGa, what matters is that you do not blindly worship someone and to me, that’s more worrying.

  23. your first half of the article reminds me of a chronic repeater in my medical college who had a very rich family background.
he would turn up for exams twice a year and invariably fail. other sympathisers would always put his predicament exactly the same way and glorify him.
eventually, he did pass after a decade or so but now looks after his family fortune.

    dear author ,
be responsible. the nation is in better hands. hope and guide it that tomorrow an even better leader takes over instead of rooting for a nincompoop

      • Rahul? Not fit to be anywhere near PM chair, leave alone s minister.Stop looking at him fir survival. If cong. 24. I am no supporter of Narendra Modi or his political party. Far from it. But I shudder to think of the calamitous disaster this country would have been faced with if the Congress Party had been in the saddle at this time, with Rahul Gandhi – or even Manmohan Singh – as the PM with a retinue of corrupt, incompetent, and indolent Congress persons as ministers, their sole qualification being that they are slavish camp followers of the Gandhi family.
Raghuram Rajan and Abhijit Bannerjee have lowered their stature by deigning to interview with an intellectually bankrupt Rahul Gandhi.

    • Well said Mr. Ramesh. Every politician & political party has its short comings.
The Man-In-Charge at the moment has his flaws, but he is a true nationalist, is totally honest and is genuinely trying his best for India. The people of India know this & hence support him.

  25. This is what is called paid journalism. He is all praise without finding even 1 fault, but has enough words to find fault in people who found fault in these interviews. Ok

    • Honest journalism. Republic, Times Now, News 18, India Today. Honest journalists .Arnab goswamy, Rahul Siva Sankar, Navika Kumar, Anand Narasimhan, Rahul Kanwar. They are not only honest but fearless

      • i was very happy during the Monmohan sing Govt …but now india is crying for food, cloth and etc….now fraud Pm is running india. GDP WILL BE ZERO VERY SOON….STOP SUPPORT MODI …WE SEEK NEW LEADER FOR INDIA … PM MODI.IS A BIG LIAR ? HE WIN ELECTION BY MISUSING EVM MACHINE AND ELECTION COMMISSIONER…..NOW INDIA BECOME POOREST COUNTRY IN WORLD BECUASE OF MODI SUPPORTER AND GOVT…..MONMOHAN SING IS BEST PM …MODI IS WORST PM.

  26. Congress is the Best Political Party, and they are Proving it. BJP and its Government had Tryed hard to Defame Rahul Gandhi Calling PAPPU and then, Judging him By this Name.
But If, We Judge Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi on the Basis of Performance then, Rahul Gandhi is the Best Leader especially During this COVID-19 Crisis.
People, Will Soon Understand the Reality.

  27. Very difficult for any economist to view post Corona situation. Views should be given and assessed. Every country has its unique way of handling economic crisis. Sitting in foreign land and expressing views is easy but viability has to be assessed by practical methods not by theory. Here lies the dilemma of Rahul Gandhi. He does not know the difference between theory and practice. Such person will not rise above a certain level as he has no practical experience in running a state or municipality. He is very unsuitable as a leader.

  28. What a load of crap. No one loves the tinpot joker, not the poor, not the middle class nor the rich. He lost in his family backyard constituency, remember? We have been witness to his incompetence and repeated failures for the last 20 years, and to hear the Darbari L media try to rally support makes one sick. Do they consider the citizens of this country zombies? And his properties in Mumbai have been seized by ED, due to his mother and his corruption. Can it get any worse? We will doing this country a great favour if this failed corrupt tinpot joker is dumped in a garbage landfill and forgotten.

  29. French hacker Elliot Alderson , more appropriate could have been “French hacker goes by the name ‘Elliot Alderson’ on twitter.

Elliot Alderson – Its a fictional character from Tv Series Mr. Robot.

  30. First of all I really don’t understand why we..the people of India give undue importance to the antinational dacoit congress, its allies leaders and fake dynast fmly? These rogues should have been in jail but out on bail, they are creating havoc in india by misleading masses, their birth right, supporting super spreaders, tablighis, stone pelters, killers of sadhus. This raul the most dangerous joker of the millennium, must not poke his nose in to the matters of national iñterests. These antinationals bloody insult our jawans and glorify terrorists, it’s high time these anti-national elements must be neutralised for the benefit of India.

  31. Repacking same failed product every time, what a pity on Congress and thier chamchas…

The print you are shame on journalism , how much you fall down to elevate this clown??

  32. The article establishes two facts 1. Mother’s love is greatest in the world even if it means a the country is on the stake. 2. Journalism needs a lot of money.

  33. I congratulate writer for his independent journalist. At least he has courage to say what is right.
I remember the day when BJP comes to power and he was defeated in Amethi. It is hard to face the defeat rather humiliation but he accompanied with Randdeep Surjewala to address the press. It is hard to accept defeat the way this gentleman has accepted defeat. I wish him best of luck. May God give him power to achieve his goal.

    • Mr.Raghuram Rajan an eminent Economist giving interview to Intenationlly acclaimed Pappu answering his written questions is not understandable & ridiculous. What RaGa want to do is to improve his position, but he failed, sorry to say personna of Mr.RaghuramRajan declined, as HC if Congress did with most intellectual Economist, financial expert Dr.MMS.

  35. Jainnab ji is this advertorial for Rahul Gandhi?? it could have been better if you had camouflaged it to sound honest…unfortunately , such pieces of literal work deserves front pages of Congress Sandesh! not at Print , unless Print has turned pint to get printed!

  36. Lot of people here are working double time in the IT cell. They are ready to blindly keep following directions since past 6yrs. The inept ability to just destroy anyone if someone is better or talks sense or questions motives.Just put all machinary to simply make him quiet. As its said about us people 80percent of us Indians we are fools believe what the sold out media shows and become followers of the greatest liers.Dnt worry things wont last for long, this will go soon .People will throw them soon and it will come from down below as the discontent mass ,the uneducated class will over turn it all, hunger will make them fight. That time this IT cell wont be of any use.

  37. Enough of your biased post, I think you guys have sold your soul for money, if money is everything for you or if there is some other agenda then you can continue with this shameful behaviour. But when you first thought of taking journalism as a career, you must have thought of being unbiased.
If you still value true journalism, then you should be equally vocal about any party, country, society or community.

  38. Where do you find these “vandhimaagadhas (court flatteres)” of the dynasty? There seems an unending supply of these in the “Print”. What utter nonsense this whole article is! Simply talking to defunct economists and having zoom sessions do not make a leader, after all the corruption of the dynastic relics!

  39. If RaGa could clean up his act and behave maturely and work with intellectuals like Abhijit Banerjee and Raghuram Rajan, he is a much better choice than NaMo anytime.
