New Delhi: Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud announced Thursday that the Supreme Court would soon be integrated into the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) platform which can track pendency of cases.
The apex court was previously outside the purview of the NJDG – a repository of data related to pendency and disposal rate of courts from the taluka level to the national level. At present, the portal shows data only up to the high court level.
The platform, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) in collaboration with the Supreme Court’s in-house team, will enable the tracking of case pendency in real time.
Justice Chandrachud said the aim was to enhance transparency and accountability in the judicial system.
He said Thursday: “It is a historic day. It is a unique platform which is developed by the NIC and in-house team of the Supreme Court. Now, at the click of a button, you can see real-time information on the pendency of cases, year-wise, total pendency of registered and unregistered cases, number of cases decided qoram wise.”
Sharing some important figures, Justice Chandrachud informed there were currently 80,000 cases pending in the Supreme Court, with an additional 15,000 cases not yet registered – therefore, not considered pending.
He also highlighted that in July, over 5,000 cases were disposed of. The Chief Justice said he was committed to reducing the backlog of cases. He added: “Five hundred and eighty three cases are pending before three-judge benches, and I will soon set up those benches to expedite their resolution.”
The CJI also stressed on the importance of data accuracy, saying data would be cleaned up to ensure physical records matched their digital version.
