Jaipur, Aug 2 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Sunday urged the youth to play a constructive role in nation-building by staying away from drugs and channelling their energy positively.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the “Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan”, a nationwide campaign aimed at mobilising the youth against substance abuse, with CM Sharma joining the programme via video conference from Udaipur.
Addressing a gathering, Sharma said, “The youth should become drug-free, disciplined and thoughtful, and use their energy, talent, capacity and potential in a positive direction.” He added that the campaign would act as an effective medium for behavioural change among youngsters.
The chief minister said the campaign would be run as a nationwide mass movement over the next 100 weeks with active public participation.
Volunteers from MY Bharat, National Service Scheme (NSS), youth clubs, educational institutions, and social and spiritual organisations are expected to take part, he said.
Sharma said contributors showing exemplary work in the campaign would be honoured at the 50th, 75th and 100th week milestones.
He said that an “energetic, aware and drug-free youth population” is the country’s biggest strength and a key driver for achieving the goal of a developed India.
The state government is taking several steps to keep the youth away from substance abuse, Sharma said, adding that more than 350 “Nayi Kiran” de-addiction centres have been set up in colleges, engineering and polytechnic institutions across the state.
He added that de-addiction wards are being established in district hospitals under the “Raj Savera” programme, while strict action is being taken under a zero-tolerance policy against illegal trade of narcotics.
Sharma said the state has launched initiatives to connect the youth with sports, education, skill development and employment opportunities, including a dedicated portal and a new youth policy focused on leadership and innovation.
Earlier, the chief minister flagged off a ‘Nari Shakti Rally’ at Rajasthan Agricultural College in Udaipur as part of a women’s safety pledge programme. The rally featured women police personnel, mounted units, NSS volunteers, students and thematic tableaux highlighting women’s safety, dignity and empowerment.
