Bengaluru, Oct 7 (PTI) Members of the Karnataka Youth Congress on Wednesday staged a torchlight protest here demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid allegations of irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.

The demonstration, led by Youth Congress state president Manjunath Gowda, was attended by several party workers who gathered at Freedom Park here in the evening hours.

They also condemned the detention of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others by the Delhi Police during a protest near Jantar Mantar in the national capital.

Speaking to reporters here, Gowda alleged that the rights of ordinary people were being taken away by the CEC Kumar and said the Youth Congress was fighting against this.

He recalled the detention of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, saying that Gandhi nevertheless came out of the bus and showed the country and the youth that he still had the strength to fight.

“Gyanesh Kumar should first resign, and a case should be filed against him. He should face that case and fight it. The Youth Congress will continue its protest until he resigns. We will not stop the protest,” he said.

The protesters held flaming torches and raised slogans against the Election Commission and the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

They also burnt an effigy accusing the Election Commission under Kumar of acting in a “partisan” manner.

However, the flames were swiftly extinguished by the Fire and Emergency Services units stationed at the venue while police tried to disperse the protesters.

The protesters also tried to breach police barricades as they attempted to march towards the Election Commission office, following which they were detained and taken into preventive custody. PTI AMP ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
