Women lead voter turnout in Tamil Nadu Assembly polls with 85 pc participation

Chennai, Apr 27 (PTI) Women voters outnumbered their male counterparts in exercising their franchise on April 23, with over 2.52 crore women—constituting nearly 86.2 per cent of the total female electorate in Tamil Nadu—enthusiastically casting their votes.

The male electorate that voted accounted for 2.35 crore, which was 83.96 per cent of the total male electorate in the state, an official said on Monday.

Tamil Nadu saw an impressive voter turnout, with over 4.87 crore electors casting their votes across all 234 Assembly constituencies in the state.

This included 4,517 third-gender voters, who represented 58.44 per cent of the registered third-gender electorate.

The state recorded an estimated overall turnout of 85.1 per cent.

Tamil Nadu has an electorate strength of 5.73 crore, comprising 2.93 crore women, 2.83 crore men, and 7,728 third-gender persons. It also included 14.59 lakh first-time voters.

A total of 4,023 candidates, including a large number of independents, contested from the 234 constituencies.

About 24.22 lakh votes were polled in Chennai district, which has 16 Assembly constituencies.

According to a source in the Greater Chennai Corporation, the overall turnout in the district was 83.71 per cent. Perambur saw the highest voter turnout, with 2.03 lakh votes polled (89.73 per cent), followed by Kolathur with 1.82 lakh (86.11 per cent).
