Agra (UP), Jul 8 (PTI) A two-storey garment shop built over a drain collapsed in Agra’s Subhash Bazaar area on Wednesday, with a woman who fell into the drain missing and four others injured, officials said.
District Magistrate Manish Bansal said the shop, located in the Mantola police station area, suddenly caved in and its debris fell into the drain.
“Four people sustained injuries. A woman fell into the drain along with the debris and is currently missing. Rescue operations are underway,” Bansal said.
He said teams from the fire department, municipal corporation and other agencies were carrying out search and rescue operations. Preliminary indications suggest that recent rains may have triggered the collapse, though the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.
Market Committee official Inder Kumar Magnani identified the injured as shop owner Tola Ram (71), Krishna (25), Lala Bhai (48) and a young girl. The missing woman was identified as Ganga Devi (55).
Magnani alleged that the shop was in a dilapidated condition and permission had been sought from the municipal corporation for repair work, but it was not granted.
He also claimed that several other shops in the market are in a similarly unsafe condition and require urgent repairs. PTI COR KIS SKY SKY
