Thane, Oct 8 (PTI) A 26-year-old woman was killed and her mother sustained injuries after a speeding container truck hit their two-wheeler on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, police said on Thursday.

According to the Kasarvadavali police, the incident took place around 9 pm on Wednesday in the Gaimukh area on the busy road.

Harshita Shiva Gowda, who worked as a physiotherapist, was riding a Honda Activa, with her mother, Nandini Shiva Gowda (47), riding pillion.

A speeding container truck suddenly swerved to the left side of the road and hit the scooter, killing Harshita and injuring her mother.

“Instead of helping the victims or reporting the accident to the police, the driver fled the scene after the collision,” a police official said.

The truck driver has been identified as Imran Qayyum Khan (51), a resident of Bhiwandi in Thane district, the official said, adding that efforts are being made to track him down. PTI COR NR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
