Mumbai, Oct 29 (PTI) Western Railway on Friday demolished the remaining 94 structures at Garib Nagar near Mumbai’s Bandra station, following the rehabilitation of affected families, officials said.

In May 2026, railway authorities undertook a major demolition drive in Garib Nagar, removing hundreds of structures on railway land, but these structures were retained for rehabilitation of eligible project-affected persons (PAPs), an official said.

These 94 structures were demolished after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) allotted alternative permanent accommodation and handed over possession, he added.

The action was taken in compliance with a Bombay High Court order dated October 23, a WR spokesperson said.

The court, while disposing of the petition, directed that eligible PAPs vacate the premises within one week and that the railway authorities undertake demolition within 48 hours thereafter, he informed.

The clearance of the remaining structures would facilitate infrastructure augmentation at Bandra Terminus, as per WR.

The proposed works include developing an integrated railway complex on the eastern side of Bandra Terminus, constructing an additional platform (PF 8), expanding stabling facilities and upgrading train maintenance infrastructure.

The plans also include improved passenger amenities, access, circulation and holding areas to enhance passenger-handling capacity and operational efficiency, as per WR. PTI KK BNM
