Chandigarh, Oct 27 (PTI) Akali Dal Waris Punjab De leader Manpreet Singh Ayali on Tuesday targeted the AAP government, accusing it of not replying to the Election Commission which sought to know any objection in registering the party.
Raising the issue of the registration of the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De by the Election Commission on the concluding day of the Punjab Assembly session here, Ayali said the ECI wrote two letters — on July 14 and October 13 — to Punjab’s Home Department through the state electoral office, asking whether it had any objection in registering the party.
Despite receiving two letters, the Home Department has not yet sent a reply, he claimed.
Ayali demanded that the Home Department send a report in favour of the party by writing back to the ECI.
He said the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De has a large base in Punjab, and more people are associating with it.
Ayali had previously accused the ECI of unnecessarily delaying the party’s registration.
He had claimed that his party fulfilled all the conditions for registration, and accused the ECI of “deliberately delaying” it.
There was “widespread resentment” among Sikhs ‘Sangat’ and supporters across the country and abroad due to the “unnecessary delay” being caused by the ECI in the registration of the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De, Ayali had said.
Akali Dal Waris Punjab De is led by Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in a jail in Assam in the 2023 Ajnala police station attack case.
During the zero hour, AAP MLA and former minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra raised the issue of releasing Jagtar Singh Hawara, jailed for life in the assassination case of then chief minister Beant Singh in 1995, on parole to allow him to meet his ailing mother.
Jouramajra said a committee of the Punjab Cabinet ministers can be formed which can take up this issue with the Centre so that Hawara could meet his mother. PTI CHS KSS
