Nainital, Apr 27 (PTI) The Uttarakhand High Court directed the state chief secretary on Monday to form a high-powered committee to address the issues of illegal parking and traffic congestion in Mussoorie.
A bench of Justices Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Siddharth Shah issued the directions while disposing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) matter filed by Mussoorie resident Parvesh Pant.
According to the petitioner, traffic has become a nuisance in the tourist town of Mussoorie. The two main causes of traffic problems, the PIL said, are homestays and hotels that do not have adequate parking spaces, and municipality-operated parking spaces that are not being run properly.
Various suggestions were given to improve the traffic condition.
The court said the committee would include the secretaries of the urban development, tourism and home departments, and the seniormost member will head the panel.
The court further directed that the committee must formulate a plan to resolve the traffic crisis within eight weeks.
Following the formulation of the plan, the committee will advertise a public hearing to seek residents’ views on the suggested solutions.
Stakeholders at the public hearing will include the petitioner, doctors, teachers, hotel-association members, taxi drivers, students and locals.
The final decisions from the public hearing will be forwarded to the state government for action. PTI COR AKY RC
