Ghazipur (UP), Oct 1 (PTI) Three persons allegedly involved in interstate arms-smuggling were arrested here, and 19 pistols and over a dozen live cartridges were recovered from them, police said on Thursday.
Superintendent of Police Iraj Raja said the arrests were made after police received intelligence that arms smugglers had gathered near a culvert in Kaithwalia village.
Based on the input, a police team intercepted three men travelling on a TVS Apache motorcycle, and recovered 19 pistols and 13 live cartridges, the SP said.
“The three accused, all residents of Ghazipur, allegedly told police that the firearms were procured from Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and other states, while some were sourced locally, and sold in the district,” Raja said.
“Payments for the weapons were made online, and their commission was also paid online,” he said.
Raja said the accused were part of a wider network involved in the illegal arms-trafficking operation and police are working to identify other members. “They have a large network which is on the police radar. Soon, the entire network will be exposed and dismantled.”
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections and further legal proceedings are underway, the official said. PTI COR KIS ARB
