Gorakhpur (UP), Jul 26 (PTI) Panic gripped Chilbilwa village in Gorakhpur’s Pipraich area after the body of an unidentified man was found floating in the Turra drain near Ghoghwa Devi Temple on Sunday morning, police said.
Villagers spotted the body around 8 am, about 50 metres from the temple, and alerted the police. A team from Pipraich police station reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.
The police said the deceased appears to be in his late 30s. He was found shirtless, wearing only a blue undergarment and the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating that the death may have occurred nearly 24 hours earlier.
Investigators suspect the body may have drifted into the drain from another location. A tattoo bearing the name “Upendra” on the man’s right hand is being treated as a crucial clue in establishing his identity.
Ramnawapur police outpost in-charge Kamlesh Pratap Singh said missing persons records are being checked from nearby police stations and efforts are underway to identify the deceased.
