Sultanpur (UP), May 5 (PTI) A 23-year-old man drowned while bathing in the Gomti river in Sultanpur district on Tuesday, while a 13-year-old boy displayed remarkable courage to rescue three other teenagers from drowning, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Kuldeep, a resident of Arjunpur Belhari village under Gosainaganj police station limits.

According to police, Kuldeep had gone to the river along with three boys –” Manjeet (15), Kallu (13) and Om Lal (15) –” to catch fish. The four later entered the river to bathe but accidentally moved into deep waters and began to drown.

At that time, Rajkumar (13), who was grazing buffaloes nearby, noticed them struggling in the water. He rushed to their aid and managed to rescue Manjeet, Kallu and Om Lal after sustained efforts, officials said.

However, Kuldeep could not be saved due to his heavier build, they added.

SHO Akhand Dev Mishra said that upon receiving information, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Jaisinghpur Prabhat Singh and Tehsildar Mayank Mishra reached the spot.

With the help of local divers, Kuldeep’s body was recovered from the river and sent for post-mortem after completing legal formalities.

Police said Kuldeep was a labourer and the youngest among six siblings. His parents had passed away earlier.

Following the incident, Jaisinghpur Block Pramukh Rahul Shukla visited the village, met the bereaved family and expressed condolences. He also provided financial assistance to Rajkumar and honoured his mother.

Shukla announced that the boy’s education expenses would be borne by him for as long as he wishes to study. PTI COR KIS NB
