Bhadohi (UP), May 5 (PTI) Bhadohi police have arrested an absconding member of an interstate gang involved in the gang-rape and trafficking of girls, an official said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Akash Gupta, was apprehended from his hometown, Meerut, on Monday, and sent to jail on Tuesday after being brought here on a transit remand.

Gupta, who was arrested earlier, had been on the run since November 2025, after securing bail Superintendent of Police Abhinav Tyagi said on October 22 last year, a woman lodged a kidnapping complaint at Gyanpur police station after her 16-year-old daughter failed to return home from the market.

“Investigation using CCTV footage and surveillance revealed an organised gang, comprising Santosh Yadav from Bhadohi, Usha Singh from Bijnor, Akash Gupta from Meerut, and Rohtas Bawariya from Rajasthan. The gang would kidnap women and minor girls, take them to different districts, gang-rape them, and subsequently sell them,” the SP said.

While all four accused were initially arrested on November 12, 2025, and booked under the Gangsters Act, Gupta had gone missing after securing bail.

According to the police, Gupta had “purchased” the minor victim from Usha Singh for Rs 2 lakh and kept her in his custody for several days, during which he not only raped her but also handed her over to others for money.

The SP added that the victim was rescued just as Gupta was preparing to sell her off to another person. PTI COR ABN ABN KSI KSI
