Kolkata, Sep 20 (PTI) Union Fisheries Minister Rajiv Lalan Singh on Monday assured West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari of all assistance in developing the state to pole position in fish production in the country.
He said there are immense opportunities to make the Sundarbans a hub for black tiger shrimp and mud crab production.
Addressing the media jointly with Adhikari after a review meeting on development of fisheries in West Bengal, Singh said, “We have assured the state of all assistance.” He expressed confidence that with the work done by the BJP government in the state in the last four months since its formation in May, West Bengal will gain the top position in fish production in the country.
Singh said West Bengal is currently in the second position in fish production in India.
He said that in a reversal of trade, India exported 500 tonnes of hilsa fish to Bangladesh this year.
The CM said a sanction letter of Rs 9 crore was handed over by Singh to him for development of six Amrit Sarovar projects in the drought-prone districts of Purulia and Bankura in West Bengal.
Amrit Sarovar project is a water conservation scheme launched by the central government in 2022.
He said that West Bengal has a golden opportunity for development of fisheries business and production with a long coast and vast water resources across the state.
“We discussed development of fishing and fisheries business from saline water to brackish water in the hills,” he said. PTI AMR NN
