Jaipur, Aug 12 (PTI) A 32-year-old undertrial prisoner lodged in a jail in Rajasthan’s Tonk district died while undergoing treatment at a hospital here on Wednesday, officials said.
The deceased inmate’s relatives, however, alleged delay by the prison administration in providing medical treatment.
The deceased Ganadev Gurjar, a resident of Chauth Ka Barwara in Sawai Madhopur district, had been lodged in Tonk district jail under judicial custody since October 30, 2025, in a case related to assault and provisions of the SC/ST Act registered at Tonk Kotwali police station, Jailer Amrit Singh Bhati said.
He said Ganadev complained of chest discomfort on Wednesday morning and was immediately taken to the health centre inside the jail premises.
As his condition was serious, he was shifted to Saadat Hospital, where doctors provided preliminary treatment. Suspecting a heart attack, they referred him to Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, the jailer said.
Ganadev was admitted to SMS Hospital, where he died during treatment, he said.
The jail administration said the preliminary cause of death is suspected to be a heart attack.
The deceased relatives have alleged negligence by the jail administration.
His relative Dhanraj Gurjar claimed that Ganadev had been unwell since Tuesday but was not taken to doctors in time, and his family was not allowed to speak to him.
“We were informed about his death on Wednesday morning,” Dhanraj said.
Officials said the actual cause of death will be established after the post-mortem report is received. PTI AG ARB ARB
