Chennai, Oct 1 (PTI) The ruling TVK and its alliance partners held a joint public meeting in Madurantakam on Thursday in support of their candidate Maragatham Kumaravel for the October 6 Assembly bypoll.

Framing its new political partnership around its stated principles, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has described the alliance as an ideological coalition committed to secularism, social justice and democratic values in Tamil Nadu.

TVK general secretary and Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources N Anand, Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Aadhav Arjuna, Minister for Energy Resources and Law R Nirmal Kumar, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B Manickam Tagore, MDMK leader Vaiko and Minister for Minorities Welfare A M Shahjahan, among others, participated in the election rally.

Speaking at the meeting, Aadhav Arjuna said, “Our core principle is secularism. By embracing the ideals of Thanthai Periyar (E V Ramasamy), Dr B R Ambedkar, Perunthalaivar K Kamaraj, Velu Nachiyar and Anjalai Ammal, we have established a government in Tamil Nadu grounded in secular principles and social justice. We will create a system where power and governance are shared, and we will also conduct a comprehensive caste-based census.”

Taking a dig at former Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Aadhav Arjuna said, “Today, Udhayanidhi is sitting as the Leader of the Opposition. Do you realise that without IUML, VCK and Congress, you would have lost your deposit in Chepauk?”

Claiming that the DMK and AIADMK were heading towards a decline under their current leadership, Nirmal Kumar alleged, “When a leader like Edappadi Palaniswami acts against his own ideology and the principles of Amma J Jayalalithaa and Puratchi Thalaivar M G Ramachandran, it shows total betrayal.” PTI SNR SSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
