Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aug 11 (PTI) A train ran over the body of an unidentified man lying on a railway track in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting the authorities to clarify that the incident is being verified.
After a video of the incident, which occurred near Purna Junction, surfaced on social media, the Nanded division of the Railways said all prescribed safety procedures and protocols had been followed.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare posted a video of the incident on X, alleging insufficient police presence on the railway track had caused the train to run over the body.
In the video, two men are seen trying to stop an approaching train using a red flag even as the body lay on the track.
“This is a shocking incident. Due to insufficient police presence on the railway tracks near the city, the train could not be stopped even though a body lay on the tracks. This incident occurred near Purna Junction in Parbhani district,” she wrote.
The Nanded division of the Railways responded to Andhare, stating that the loco pilot had informed the railway authorities about the body and the GRP, who are responsible for the removal of bodies as per the prescribed procedure, were alerted.
Personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) also reached the spot, but were awaiting the GRP’s arrival, it said, adding that a speed restriction was immediately imposed on approaching trains.
The body was subsequently removed by the GRP and sent for post-mortem, it said.
