Tirupathur, Jul 28 (PTI) A special sub-inspector of police was caught red-handed and arrested by the DVAC sleuths for accepting a Rs 5,000 bribe to process a station bail and forward a vehicle for inspection.
According to Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) sources here, the accused, Tr Ramakrishnan, was serving as the officer-in-charge at the Alangayam police station in Tirupathur district.
The case originates from a road accident involving a four-wheeler driven by the complainant, Manjunathan, a resident of nearby Ambur.
Following the collision, Manjunathan sought to complete legal procedures to secure his release and retrieve his vehicle.
However, Special Sub-inspector (SSI) Ramakrishnan allegedly demanded a sum of Rs 5,000 as illegal gratification.
The payment was made as a precondition for granting station bail and for sending the impounded car to the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) for statutory evaluation.
Unwilling to comply with the bribe demand, Manjunathan approached the Tirupathur DVAC detachment and lodged a formal complaint.
Based on his statement, anti-corruption officials registered a case and organised a trap on July 27.
During the trap proceedings, SSI Ramakrishnan accepted the Rs 5,000 bribe from Manjunathan.
DVAC officers intervened immediately, recovered the tainted currency, and arrested the officer on the spot.
He was subsequently produced before a local judicial magistrate and remanded to custody.
