Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu), Jun 1 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday lashed out at the opposition parties for belittling voters, saying the same people who voted for the DMK and AIADMK in the past had made TVK script history in 2026.
Sharpening his attack on the DMK for labelling his supporters and people who voted for him as “Tharkuris” (unintelligent) Vijay said the DMK insulted the people, calling them unintelligent and that they voted for the TVK out of sheer glamour (for Vijay) and lacked political knowledge.
“Tharkuri ama Tharkuri… nalla varudhu … vendamnu parkuren (I am getting a strong urge to say something else for calling the people unintelligent, but I am holding myself back,” he said at a meeting held at St Joseph’s College here to thank the voters for ensuring a victory for the TVK in the April 23 Assembly election.
Despite winning 107 MLAs, the TVK succeeded in forming the government with the support of the Left parties, IUML and the VCK. About 25 AIADMK legislators indulged in cross-voting during the floor test on May 13, thus enabling the TVK muster 144 ayes during the confidence motion moved by Vijay in the Assembly.
At the meeting, Vijay said that voters became good if they voted for the DMK and ‘Tharkuri’ if they voted for the TVK. “The same people have voted for you all these years. Did they come from another planet to vote for you? They made us write history and made your political career a question mark,” the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder said.
He said that hardly a month after coming to power, his government announced 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers, doubling the 100 units of free power provided by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
He accused the DMK of making baseless accusations as it was frustrated due to losing power. He sought to know what the DMK had done during its five years of rule in the state and said, “You were desperate to close the files related to corruption and money looted from TASMAC. But this Vijay closed the same TASMAC (liquor) outlets that were a nuisance to the people, and waived off the farmers’ crop loans.” PTI JSP JSP ADB
