Chennai, Oct 27 (PTI) PMK chief Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday expressed shock over the escape of 17 inmates from the Theni district jail after assaulting prison guards, terming the incident a “stark failure” of the state prison department.

He demanded swift action against negligent officials.

The PMK leader criticised the security lapses that allowed high-risk prisoners—including those detained under the POCSO Act and the Goondas Act—to escape.

“Prison breaks, which were once seen only in movies, are now becoming a reality, signalling a weakening administration in law enforcement and prison management,” Anbumani said.

Escape of 17 inmates by overpowering duty guards cannot be dismissed as a minor lapse, he said.

Raising suspicions over the timeline, the PMK chief pointed out a significant delay between the estimated time of the break and when the police were officially notified.

Expressing concern that only four escapees had been nabbed even after 12 hours, he urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into any potential conspiracy behind the jailbreak and take strict action against delinquent officials. PTI SNR SNR ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
