Amritsar, May 4 (PTI) Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday said Sardar Teja Singh Samundri played a pivotal role in Sikh reform movements and termed his legacy as a guiding force for future generations.

He emphasised the need to acquaint the youth with such historical personalities who dedicated their lives to social and religious reforms.

Kataria was addressing a book launch ceremony along with seminar on the theme ‘Life and Contributions of Sardar Teja Singh Samundri’.

A book on Teja Singh Samundri, authored by Dr Piar Singh and translated into English by Vice-Chancellor Prof Karamjeet Singh, was formally released in the presence of Kataria, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Sagarpreet Singh Hooda DGP, Chandigarh.

In his address, the governor said the values of equality and social harmony embedded in Indian traditions such as ‘sangat’ and ‘pangat’ remain alive even today.

He emphasised that these practices reflect the principle that there is no distinction between rich and poor or high and low, and that all individuals are equal.

Kataria noted that such values are passed on through stories and historical accounts, which play a crucial role in shaping societal consciousness.

Referring to the life of Teja Singh Samundri, he said if such contributions had not been documented, many great personalities would have been forgotten, known only through limited references.

He said India’s strength lies in its rich tradition of writing and preserving knowledge, as the works of poets and scholars have kept the nation’s spirit alive across generations.

Kataria stated that the sacrifices of our forefathers continue to inspire the present generation, and their legacy is evident in the continued willingness of youth to serve the nation.

Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Sandhu paid tributes to his grandfather Teja Singh Samundri.

He described the event not just as a historical engagement, but as a deep reflection on the “inheritance of values” that shaped his own journey in public service.

He recounted the unwavering grit of the Akali leader, who famously refused conditional release from British custody, choosing to die in Lahore Central Jail in 1926 at age 43 rather than compromise on principles.

He emphasised that his grandfather’s role in the Gurdwara reform movement was rooted in restoring dignity and community ownership.

He noted that discipline and non-violence shown during the ‘Guru Ka Bagh’ and ‘Keys Morchas’ drew international praise from figures like Mahatma Gandhi.

The LG stated that the legacy of “institution-building” remains the most vital lesson for today’s generation.

He urged the youth to carry forward the torch of integrity, accountability, and selfless service in an ever-evolving world. PTI JMS CHS SKY SKY
