Kolkata, Apr 27 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging that the ruling party at the Centre had deployed “agents” in the name of observers for the West Bengal Assembly polls.
Yadav, however, asserted that despite all this, Trinamool Congress would retain power.
In a post on his X, Yadav said, “BJP has sent its tested agents from places like Rampur and Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh in the name of observers, but nothing will come out of it. Mamata Banerjee is here, and Didi will remain.” He also warned of action against such elements, saying, “At the right time, there will be a thorough probe into the criminal activities of these ‘agents’ who are out to implement the BJP’s agenda, and strict punitive action will be taken”.
“Those who violate democracy will not be spared,” the SP leader added in the post.
While Yadav did not name anyone, the TMC in a statement on X said, “Uttar Pradesh’s notorious ‘Singham’ and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s favourite ‘encounter specialist’ Ajay Pal has been appointed as police observer for South 24 Parganas by the Election Commission.” “This is the same officer infamous for his trigger-happy ‘thok do’ attitude. His track record is even darker,” the party said.
“This is the kind of ‘impartial’ police observer the Election Commission is handpicking for Bengal. Apparently, a corrupt and criminal track record has now become the primary qualification for the job,” the TMC said in the post.
The party also shared Yadav’s post on its official social media handle.
Pal could not be contacted, but BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya said EC has removed partisan, TMC-friendly police and state officials to ensure a free and fair polls.
“The EC has brought officials who will not allow TMC goons to create mayhem on polling day and work without any intimidation to ensure a violence-free, incident-free, peaceful vote. TMC’s game is up,” Bhattacharya told PTI.
An EC official said the poll panel only wants to facilitate smooth, peaceful and fair polling in the state and all the decisions were prompted by this sole consideration. PTI SUS MNB
