Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 30 (PTI) A Samajwadi Party (SP) delegation on Sunday visited the family of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in Gorakhpur, expressing solidarity with her family and assuring them of all possible support.

Led by SP district president Brajesh Kumar Gautam and city president Shabbir Qureshi, the delegation handed over to the family a cheque of Rs 1 lakh on behalf of party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

The delegation said it would give the girl’s kin a government job when the SP comes to power.

The family demanded strict punishment against the guilty during the visit.

According to the police, on July 28, a 32-year-old constable allegedly took the girl to a cremation ground around 15 km from the district hospital, where he raped and killed her and dumped the body in a river.

Abhishek Yadav had kidnapped the girl from the district hospital the same day.

According to the post-mortem report, the girl suffered multiple fractures and severe trauma, before dying from drowning and asphyxia.

The girl’s family, originally from Azamgarh and living in Gorakhpur for the past four years, said she had gone to the hospital to deliver food to her elder sister, who was admitted there.

CCTV footage reportedly showed the constable approaching the child in uniform and taking her away on a motorcycle.

The police scanned nearly 200 CCTV cameras before identifying the accused through the vehicle registration number.

He was arrested on July 29 and allegedly confessed during interrogation.

The girl’s body was found about 36 hours later at his instance.

Earlier, Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Kaustubh said the constable has been dismissed from service.

A case has been registered under the POCSO Act against him, and proceedings under the National Security Act (NSA) have been initiated. PTI COR NAV VN VN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
