New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Wednesday condemned the alleged use of force by the Delhi Police against protesters and journalists at Jantar Mantar, and called upon farmers and rural workers to join upcoming agitations against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll.

The farmers’ body also appealed to the Supreme Court to declare the Assembly elections held in Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry “null and void”, alleging that those were based on voter lists prepared through the SIR.

“Peaceful protest is a constitutional right of all citizens and does not need any permission,” the SKM said, demanding that the executive and the judiciary address the concerns raised by the protesters.

The SKM said women protesters and three women journalists have accused police personnel of inappropriate touching and groping during the action at Jantar Mantar.

It reiterated its demand for the removal and prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and said its national council meeting in Karnal on October 12 would decide the further course of action on the SIR issue.

“SKM will fight tooth and nail to defend the democratic right to protest,” it said. PTI AO RC

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
