Kolkata, Apr 18 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday said the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal should have been conducted after the assembly elections.
Sukhu, who was speaking to PTI Videos on the sidelines of campaign for Congress candidates in the upcoming assembly polls, said his party had not been in power in West Bengal for several decades, though much of the ‘vikas’ (development) in the state had been made possible due to the initiatives taken by the previous Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.
Sukhu said the SIR exercise should have been conducted after the assembly polls.
“This is important so that the exercise does not electorally benefit any particular party but help the voter,” he said.
About the prospect of Congress in this election, he said, “Despite development work by the previous Congress-led UPA government at the Centre in past, the party has not been able to come to power in the state.” “However, this time, the party, as part of its quest to strengthen democracy, is going alone and reaching out to people while remaining grounded to its ideology and principles. Gradually, people’s trust will increase, and once that happens, the Congress will emerge as an alternative,” he said.
Sukhu said Congress will move from having a marginal presence to becoming a key opposition force and eventually coming to the centre stage. PTI SUS ACD
