Ranchi, May 15 (PTI) The upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and farmers’ losses due to storms and unseasonal rains were discussed at the meeting of Jharkhand BJP office bearers on Friday, a party leader said.
The party asserted that the names of many non-Indians, as well as deceased and shifted electors, have been included in the voters’ list, and these errors need to be corrected.
The meeting was chaired by state BJP president Aditya Sahu and attended by the leader of opposition in the Jharkhand assembly Babulal Marandi among other senior leaders.
“We know that the SIR exercise is set to begin in Jharkhand. We held a detailed discussion regarding it. The Election Commission has urged all political parties to verify the names and photographs of their respective parties’ booth-level agents (BLAs) and submit them to the district election office. The BJP has already completed this job,” BJP state general secretary Ganesh Mishra said at a press conference here.
The EC on Thursday announced the rollout of SIR in 16 states, including Jharkhand, and three Union territories in a phased manner beginning May 30.
Nearly 2.64 crore voters of the state would be covered under the exercise through door-to-door verification from June 30, officials said. The final electoral rolls will be published on October 7.
Mishra said, “We must carry out this (SIR) work properly because we know that the voter lists prepared here contain many names that are either not Indian citizens, or even if they are citizens, they do not actually reside in the state. Many of the names included in the list belong to deceased persons or people who are not present at all.” “It is very important to remove or correct all such names through this SIR so that the upcoming elections are held with only genuine and pure voters,” he said.
The state BJP leader said they received information that a five-day government training session will be conducted, and party representatives will take part in it.
“We also briefly discussed this during the meeting,” he said.
He said the office-bearers also discussed the crises faced by farmers due to hailstorms, storms, and unseasonal rains.
“The government’s claim of giving an MSP of Rs 3,200 per quintal for paddy has failed. The party has decided to hold one-day dharnas at all block offices in the state on different dates to highlight the farmers’ issues along with other local problems,” he added. PTI SAN NN
