Gangtok, Sep 19 (PTI) Sikkim Chief Minister’s Press Secretary Yougan Tamang on Saturday said the state could be a potential model for a sustainable “Himalayan creative economy” driven by youth, indigenous knowledge and digital entrepreneurship.
He said the state’s approach to strengthening the creative economy was centred on public-private partnerships and leveraging the potential of its youth.
Tamang said Sikkim could emerge as a pilot state for a “Himalayan creative economy model” combining sustainability, indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage and digital-age entrepreneurship”.
He was speaking at the fourth season of the Creative Economy Forum, an initiative of Cinedarbaar held under the aegis of the Union ministries of Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology, and Culture, an official statement said here.
Tamang participated in a panel discussion titled “Orange is the New Currency: Creative Capital Uniting Nations”, alongside international panellists including Brazilian Ambassador Kenneth Felix Haczynski da Nobrega and Suriname Ambassador Hanisha Jairam, it said.
Tamang said the Northeast’s cultural diversity and heritage should not only be celebrated but also leveraged as an economic asset through the creative economy.
He said sustainable livelihoods could be created around indigenous art, culture, traditions, crafts, music, storytelling and other forms of creative expression while also helping preserve the region’s cultural heritage.
Referring to the state government’s vision for a Creatorpreneur Policy, Tamang said young people could be harnessed to drive the economy of Sikkim and contribute to the country’s wider creative economy.
He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s description of the Northeast as “Ashtalakshmi”, saying the region’s considerable creative and economic potential offered opportunities for greater mainstream engagement. PTI COR RG
