New Delhi: The man who fired at a group of protesters in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar Thursday afternoon had roamed around in the area for over three hours and even posted three Facebook lives from there.

The 17-year-old has been identified as a resident of Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. One student, Shadab Farooq, was injured in the firing in his left hand and taken to AIIMS.

According to a police source, the 17-year-old had planned his visit to Jamia Nagar and even arranged a country-made pistol for the attack.

He posted the lives, along with photos of the protest, on his Facebook profile.

His bio on Facebook says “[name] naam hai mera, bio main itna kafi hai, baki samay ane par. Jai Shree Ram ([name] is my name. This much is sufficient in the bio. Rest when the time comes. Jai Shree Ram).”

The 17-year-old shouted “Yeh lo azaadi” before he opened fire at the students, who were protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, triggering panic in Jamia Nagar. He was detained from the spot by the police and is being questioned.

‘Shaheen Bagh, khel khatam’

According to a second source in the Delhi Police, the 17-year-old had been sharing inflammatory posts since 29 January. He has also shared posts that suggest that he was planning such an attack.

Just a few minutes before he opened fire, he wrote a post on his Facebook saying “Shaheen Bagh, Khel Khatam (Shaheen Bagh, the game is over)”.

He has also written a post saying “Mere ghar ka khayal rakhna (Take care of my home)”, “Azadi de rha hu (Giving you freedom)”.

While he was roaming around in Jamia Nagar, he continued to write on Facebook, “M yha akela hindu hun (I am the only Hindu here)

‘Wrap me in saffron in my last journey’

He then goes on to say that after his death he should be wrapped in a saffron cloth and Jai Shri Ram should be chanted in the procession.

Meri antim yatra par, mujhe bhagwa main le jaye aur jai sri ram je nare ho” he wrote.

The 17-year-old also wrote that he was doing this to take revenge for “Chandan”. “Chandan Bhai, Badla apke liye hai,” he wrote.

Chandan Gupta died in communal clashes that broke out in a Muslim-majority locality of Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj during an unauthorised ‘Tiranga bike rally’ organised by RSS’ student union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on 26 January 2018.

The police are still questioning the 17-year-old to ascertain where he got the pistol from.

“We are yet to ascertain who sent him, his purpose. He is being questioned,” the first police source said.

  1. Publication of such 2 penny articles should be banned and media houses penalized for spreading communal disturbance. Media is going too far destroying the fabric of the country. It is high time GoI must bring media regulatory framework.

  2. These type of jokers think life is a Hindi film. Self pity syndrome detected. Can’t accept the failure of their ideas. Can’t accept that their ideas and beliefs have led to the present state of the economy. The need to scapegoat the minorities is tangibly evident. Lack of a well formed conscience is evident. The hatred is evident. The desperation is childish. How many more unemployeds are there in this state is anybody’s guess.

  3. Obviously a misguided or indoctrinated Hindutvawaadi. What is more alarming is the cops as mute spectators. This is the third time that the Delhi cops have been found wanting. The police head should be made to resign.
