‘Satyagraha’ good idea, but Opposition must stick to its principles and speak truth: Paswan

Raipur, Oct 4 (PTI) Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has rightly named his digital initiative ‘Satyagraha’, but the Opposition has been repeatedly spreading “lies and confusion” among people.

Gandhi on Saturday launched the ‘Satyagraha’ digital platform to consolidate issue-based protests taking place across the country, alleging that truth was being suppressed and that it was his responsibility to ensure this did not happen.

Asked about Gandhi’s initiative, Paswan told reporters here, “Rahul ji has named his website ‘Satyagraha’, but repeatedly spreading lies and confusion has become a habit of the Opposition. They raise issues and leave them midway, sometimes raising concerns over EVMs and sometimes SIR, and create confusion among people.

“Satyagraha is a good thought, but its principles should also be followed. The Opposition should speak the truth instead of repeatedly lying and misleading people,” Paswan, who heads the Lok Jan Shakti Party (Ram Vilas), told reporters here.

Paswan alleged that the Opposition’s stand on SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of voter lists varied depending on the political party in power in a state.

“When you win elections, SIR is considered correct there, but when we win, it becomes wrong. Wherever our government comes to power after winning elections, there are allegations of irregularities in SIR. But in states where you have your own chief ministers, such as Telangana, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, SIR is considered correct,” he said.

“The reality is that people are rejecting you. You will not understand this through Satyagraha; you will understand it through introspection,” Paswan said. PTI TKP NR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
