New Delhi: “Saffronisation” of the country is Maharashtra BJP MP Gopal Chinayya Shetty’s solution to all problems, including drug abuse.

He said Tuesday that Parliament would not need to debate drug abuse once 80 per cent of the population joined the BJP.

“The day this country gets saffronised, we will be able to find solutions to all such issues,” Shetty told the Lok Sabha, during a discussion on substance abuse.

Shetty went on to say that an increased number of rehabilitation centres was not the solution. “We need to create a country where no one goes in this direction,” he said.

The Maharashtra MP also had a few words of advice for BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali. “The day before yesterday, Danish Ali was wearing a ‘bhagwa’. I would request him to wear the ‘bhagwa’ at least once a week so that he develops the habit of saying good things, and also speaking the truth,” Shetty said.

A ‘bhagwa’ is a swallow-tailed, saffron scarf associated with Hindutva.

Shetty also said when followers of Danish Ali wore the ‘bhagwa’, there would be no need to discuss the ‘drug abuse’ issue. The MP said people associated with the RSS were less involved in “such things” compared to others in the country.

Before his “saffronisation” comments, Shetty began his speech by highlighting the steps taken by the Narendra Modi government to fight drug abuse, including strengthening the anti-narcotics force, changing the NDPS Act, etc.

The MP was most impressed by the Home Ministry’s work in the anti-drug campaign. He said, “Home Minister Amit Shah, through the Ministry of Home Affairs, has worked hard on this. Wherever Amit Shah’s name surfaces, 50 percent of the problem is automatically solved. Another 25 percent of problems will be solved before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.”
