Chandigarh, Oct 23 (PTI) The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis took suo motu cognisance of Ajay Kumar’s murder in Abohar here and sought a report from the Punjab chief secretary and the director general of police (DGP).

In a letter to the top officials, the commission directed the authorities to ensure justice for the victim’s family according to the law and submit a report detailing the action taken in the case.

Police said Ajay was shot by an assailant in Sant Nagar, Abohar, on September 27. He underwent treatment for several days after sustaining critical injuries but died in a hospital on October 19. His family has been demanding justice for the murder.

Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar brought Ajay’s family outside the Punjab Vidhan Sabha complex for the second time on Friday. He also brought them on Thursday.

According to the letter, Ajay belonged to the sanitation workers’ community, and his father is also a sanitation worker. The commission recommended that a senior police officer not directly involved in the ongoing probe supervise the investigation.

It has also called for a thorough examination of all available evidence, including CCTV footage, forensic evidence, call records and the deceased’s statement.

In addition, the authorities have been asked to protect the victim’s family and witnesses, and to provide appropriate compensation and legal assistance.

Jakhar urged the Punjab government to take the commission’s recommendations seriously and submit a report on the investigation’s progress. He said the victim’s family must get justice and that any decision regarding the accused must be based on evidence and taken in accordance with the law.

“We are being forced to return here repeatedly to make this deaf government hear us. Yet neither the chief minister nor any minister in his government has the courage to listen to this family’s plea,” he said.

According to the victim’s family, Ajay’s brother testified in the 2015 Bheem murder case, which resulted in two people being sentenced to 20 years in prison.

They further alleged that Ajay was murdered after one of the convicts was recently released on bail. PTI CHS ASD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
