Chandigarh, Oct 3 (PTI) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday urged all political parties to contest elections on real issues facing Punjab and refrain from levelling false and baseless charges against its party leaders, warning that those making such charges would face legal action.

SAD chief spokesman Arshdeep Singh Kler said a sub-committee headed by Amardeep Singh Dharni would look into all baseless allegations aimed at indulging in character assassination of the Akali leaders on social media.

“A 12-member sub-committee had been tasked with examining all false allegations being spread on social media. These allegations will be met head-on and criminal defamation cases will be filed against all those indulging in spreading false rumours and malicious content,” Kler said.

He said SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal had given clear instructions to the committee to examine all newspapers, websites, channels and other modes of media and social media on a regular basis.

Kler also said that such teams would also be constituted at the district level in the coming days.

The SAD leader said if any digital channel or broadcaster wanted to air news regarding the party and its leaders, they should first get authorised reactions duly signed by concerned persons or their representatives.

“Delhi-based parties were in the habit of floating fake narratives and indulging in character assassination. In the name of freedom of speech, we cannot speak whatever we want against our political opponents.

Such persons should be prepared to face notices and be subjected to criminal defamation”, said Kler. PTI CHS KSI

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
